Athena Moore


 
NASW-NYC Names New Associate Executive Director

 

NASW-NYC has appointed Athena Moore to be its new Associate Executive Director. Ms. Moore brings a wealth of management, policy, communications and membership experience to NASW.  She has held various leadership positions with the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, the Bronx Borough President’s Office and as the Executive Director of the newly created Black Equity Alliance at the United Way of NYC. She has also taught social policy at the NYU School of Social Work as an adjunct professor and remains committed to uplifting and preparing the next generation of policy advocates and social workers. 

  “Athena has dedicated much of her professional career to addressing social policy and practice issues, with over 13 years experience in the public and non-profit sectors,” said Robert Schachter.  “I am confident that her experience, energy and talent will be a valuable asset and lead our organization forward in meaningful ways.”

A strategic thinker and organizer, Ms. Moore is widely respected for her broad expertise in human services and her commitment to helping poor and underserved communities.  She has been successful working collaboratively with stakeholders of diverse backgrounds, including practitioners, advocates, volunteers, elected officials and funding partners.  Ms. Moore has spearheaded numerous strategic and program planning efforts designed to improve organizational effectiveness and service delivery.  Earlier this year, Ms. Moore developed a comprehensive strategic plan for the Administration for Children’s Services.

In her new position, Ms. Moore will provide support to chapter leaders and staff in carrying out the organization’s objectives, serving as editor of Currents, the primary vehicle of communication to 10,000 members, and working with NASW’s committees and task forces to address critical social policies, among others.  

Ms. Moore holds a Master’s Degree in Policy and Management from the New School University.  Through the years, she has remained actively involved with numerous committees and organizations such as the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management, Child Welfare League of America, Human Services Council, the Institute for Leadership and Change, National Association of Female Executives, Alliance for Nonprofit Governance, among others.
