ACT Team Peer Specialist
Responsibilities:
The Peer Specialist, reporting to the ACT Team Leader, is a member of the Nathaniel Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team. The ACT team provides community based mental health treatment services to promote the recovery and community integration of recipients with a severe and persistent mental illness who have been charged with a felony. The Nathaniel ACT team is the only ACT team in NYC dedicated solely to providing Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) services to individuals convicted of felony offenses. The Peer Specialist leads the implementation of peer counseling, self-help rehabilitation and recovery services within the ACT team in addition to providing direct services in wellness recovery, integrated dual diagnosis, family/ relationship counseling, daily living skills and general case management. The specialist works as part of a transdisciplinary team made up of social workers, substance abuse specialist, nurses and a psychiatrist. The specialist must be able to advocate and be a liaison for recipients with entitlements agencies, housing providers and in the court system; provide recipient oriented services in a non-judgmental manner.
Qualifications:
The Peer Specialist must be a mental health consumer with a history of involvement in the criminal justice system. As an individual in recovery from mental illness and substance abuse the peer must be willing to utilize his/ her recovery experience to engage and support alternatives to incarceration participants. The candidate should have a strong knowledge of wellness, recovery and self-help processes. Effective communication and written skills are essential together with computer skills. Bilingual skills in Spanish preferred. Driver’s license is highly preferred because of the citywide nature of the ACT services.
