LCSW SCOPE OF PRACTICE

Includes the LMSW scope of practice and:

  • Diagnosis of mental, emotional, behavioral, addictive and developmental disorders and disabilities;
  • Psychosocial aspects of illness, injury, disability and impairment within a psychosocial framework
  • Administration and interpretation of tests and measures of psychosocial functioning
  • Development and implementation of appropriate assessment-based treatment plans
  • Provision of crisis-oriented psychotherapy and brief, short-term and long-term psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic treatment to individuals, couples, families and groups, habilitation, psychoanalysis and behavior therapy;
  • All undertaken for purpose of preventing, assessing, treating, ameliorating and resolving psychosocial dysfunction with the goal of maintaining and enhancing the mental, emotional, behavioral and social functioning and well-being of individuals, couples, families, small groups, organizations, communities and society.

 

LCSW GRANDPARENTING REQUIREMENTS

Applicant must:

  • Be licensed and currently registered NY State certified social worker• Submit an application (Form LCSW-1) and fee for initial licensure ($270) by September 1, 2005;
  • Document at least three years of full-time experience, or the part-time equivalent, of psychotherapy experience (Form LCSW-4) under supervision acceptable to the Department (Form LCSW-4B and Form LCSW-4Q, if applicable).

 

Documentation of Experience

Experience must be equivalent to that required for the three-year or six-year psychotherapy privilege, including the frequency and duration of  supervision and the qualifications of the supervisor. Experience will be by the Department to determine if it is acceptable. Indicate in item 10 of Form 4 that you are applying for the L.C.S.W. on the basis of this provision. Application must be filed with the Department by  September 1, 2005.

Competent practice depends on sound clinical understanding of:

• Attachment

• Separation and loss

• Trauma

• Family systems

• Child development

• Addiction

• Domestic violence

• Sexual abuse

• Mental disorders

Understanding is applied:

•In direct client contacts

•In treatment planning and evaluation

•In liaison contacts with other treatment providers

•In advocacy on behalf of clients

•In treatment team meetings

•In supervisory dialogue

Child welfare workers use skills of:

•Engagement

•Assessment

•Treatment planning and contracting

•Developing treatment strategies to assist clients in modifying attitudes and behaviors that are maladaptive

•Crisis intervention

•Evaluation and termination

Treatment planning and psychotherapeutic intervention is informed by psychiatric and psychological evaluations, including DSM IV diagnostic understanding

UCR/FASP is a treatment planning document that:

•Represents a behavioral description of internal change

•Is client-driven

•Establishes incremental goals

Client population treated:

•Children

•Adolescents

•Adults

with varied DSM IV diagnoses including PTSD, Depression, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, etc.

Modalities used:

•Individual, group and family sessions

Using strategies from psychodynamic treatment, family therapy, cognitive behavioral treatment, brief therapies, resiliency theory, narrative therapy, etc.

Goal of treatment:

To modify attitudes and behavior which are intellectually, socially or emotionally maladaptive”, for example

•The use of violence as a disciplinary tool

•Withdrawal from parenting due to depression

•Unwillingness of caretaker to pursue medical or other necessary services for child in need

•Child abandonment or neglect due to addiction

•Poor anger management or communication skills for adolescents

 

Supervisory tasks:

•To teach and model a diagnostically informed understanding of individual

  and family dynamics regarding assessment and client interventions

•To ensure collaborative, strengths-based treatment planning with clients

•To assist workers to develop an incremental outcome orientation to the work   with clients, rather than a recurrent crisis management approach

GRANDPARENTING PROVISION FOR LICENSURE

Education Law allows an applicant who is a certified social worker on September 1, 2005, to become licensed as an L.C.S.W. without meeting the requirements for the clinical content in the M.S.W. degree or further examination if the applicant:

• is a licensed and currently registered New York State certified social worker;
