Child Abuse and Maltreatment Training for Mandated Reporters
Every L.M.S.W. and L.C.S.W. applicant for licensure or a limited permit must complete coursework or training in the identification and reporting of child abuse in accordance with Section 6507(3)(a) of the Education Law. You must submit a certificate of completion from an approved provider or file a claim of exemption before a New York State license or permit can be issued. You may be eligible for exemption form the training if you can document, to the satisfaction of the Department, that your practice does not involve professional contact with persons under the age of 18 and that you do not have contact with persons 18 or older with a handicapping condition who reside in a residential care school or facility. If you have questions about this requirement, please contact the Professional Education Program Review Unit at oppleuca@mail.nysed.gov or call 518-474-3817 extension 360. The New York City Chapter is currently offering on-line training in collaboration with the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) to offer on-line training to meet the requirements for mandated reporters in New York State.
The NASW-NYC examined several training opportunities and determined this course, as offered by NYSNA, to be of high quality, good monetary value, as well as very user friendly. We especially appreciated that the entire training could be done on-line, a certificate of completion is provided immediately after taking the exam, and the certificate required by the State Education Department is sent electronically at the same time.
