What Prison Isn’t

Children from the Incarcerated Mothers Program share their writings to help educate the public about the effect of the Rockefeller Drug Laws (2001)

Prison Is Not Help
By Anjelica age 13

If I had to I would beg you! Could you do me a favor and put my mom in a different place where she would not be in a prison and somewhere she could get help for her drug problem?

Prison Is Not Human
By Mary age 10

I do not like the law that says people that do drugs have to go to jail. I feel that jail does not help them at all. I don’t like the fact that women’s jails do not have trailer visits. I do not like that they do not get to touch the money or the vending machines and that they don’t get to go past the guards. I would like it if they got a chance to go into the children’s playroom and have more hugs and kisses and sitting on their laps.

  Prison Is Not Family
By Anonymous

Jail is bad in the sense that it corrupts the minds of mothers and doesn’t allow them to be a mother. It breaks up families. Addiction is a sickness so why are addicts punished? They should
be in rehab centers.

Prison Is Not Love
By Alyssa age 14

Mom’s in prison…
Is the color blue?
It feels like death
It tastes like sour milk
It smells like dirty socks
It sounds like an echo
It makes me feel like I am not loved
