GRANDPARENTING PROVISION FOR LICENSURE FOR LMSW

http://www.op.nysed.gov/lmsw.htm

If you received an M.S.W. degree from a graduate social work program registered by the Department as licensure qualifying, accredited by the CSWE, or determined by the Department to be equivalent to a NY State registered program, and you have five years of social work experience as of September 1, 2004, you may be eligible for licensure as an L.M.S.W. without an examination.  In order to be licensed under the grandparenting provision, you must:

  • Submit the application (Form LMSW-1) and fee for initial licensure ($270) prior to  September 1, 2005;
  • Have your school verify completion of the M.S.W. degree (Form LMSW-2);
  • Be at least 21 years of age and be of good moral character; and
  • Have your employer(s) or licensed professional colleague(s) verify the completion of at least five years of full-time employment in social work prior to September 1, 2004 (Forms LMSW-4 and LMSW-4B).

Your experience will be reviewed by the Department to determine if it is acceptable. If not, you will be required to meet New York State's examination requirement.

Note: After September 1, 2004, you will need a license or a limited permit to practice as an L.M.S.W. If you have met all requirements for licensure under this provision and your experience is being reviewed, you may apply for a limited permit to practice with supervision.

GRANPARENTING PROVISION FOR LICENSURE FOR LCSW http://www.op.nysed.gov/lcsw.htm

NY State Education Law allows an applicant who is a certified social worker (CSW) on September 1, 2004, to become licensed as an L.C.S.W. without meeting the requirements for the clinical content in the M.S.W. degree or further examination if the applicant:

  • is a licensed and currently registered New York State certified social worker;
  • submits an application (Form LCSW-1) and fee for initial licensure ($270) by September 1, 2005; and
  • documents at least three years of full-time experience, or the part-time equivalent, of psychotherapy experience (Form LCSW-4) under supervision acceptable to the Department (Form LCSW-4B and Form LCSW-4Q, if applicable).

Your experience will be reviewed by the Department to determine if it is acceptable. You must indicate in item 10 of Form 4 that you are applying for the L.C.S.W. on the basis of this provision.
