Mastering The Nuts & Bolts of Private Practice

Seasoned private practitioners as well as those new to private practice will benefit from the practical guidance and information covered in this workshop, which provides an overview of many of the business and professional considerations involved in launching and maintaining a private practice. 

Please note that this workshop will not cover marketing or fees.
This workshop does not provide CEUs.

Insurance Considerations
including, among other things:
  • billing for in-network and out-of-network services
  • CPT and ICD-10-CM coding and the DSM-5
  • understanding the concept of medical necessity and how it positions you to effectively respond to treatment plan reviews
  • audit triggers and audit preparedness
  • what every private practitioner needs to know about Medicare - even if you plan never to see a Medicare client
  • protecting yourself from insurance company scams
  • how to respond when an insurance company delays paying for your services 
 
Risk Management
Including, among other things
  • how to minimize the chance of being charged with professional misconduct
  • how to be well positioned to defend yourself if you do face charges. 

Telepractice
  • how to avoid some of the potential legal risks involved in providing services by telephone and video call services like Skype
How Best to Protect Your Financial Assets
  • is incorporation beneficial?
  • professional liability insurance and other insurance options to consider

Documentation
including, among other things:
  • record retention requirements and recommendations
  • being prepared to respond to requests for records and subpoenas
  • how to determine if your practice needs to be HIPAA compliant

Including, among other things:
  • what tax forms you need to know about
  • what deductions you can take
  • local tax responsibilities you should be aware of
  • how to avoid the additional expense of late payment penalties and interest

  • This workshop does not cover marketing or fees, which are addressed in a separate workshop.
  • This workshop is appropriate for LCSWs (and other clinicians fully licensed to practice autonomously), and those close to fulfilling the requirement for the LCSW. Other interested LMSWs should contact Lynne Spevack (718-377-3400) to discuss the suitability of this workshop.

Workshop instructor Lynne Spevack LCSW is a seasoned psychotherapist and practice building consultant with offices in the Financial District and Midwood Brooklyn. Lynne happily maintains a full-time practice - free from the intrusion of managed care - for over twenty-five years. Lynne is the founder and Chairperson of the 800+ member Private Practitioners Group, a committee of the NYC Chapter of NASW that focuses on the pragmatic business considerations of establishing and maintaining a social work private practice. With over 30 years of clinical experience, Lynne is a "therapist's therapist," providing psychotherapy for clinician-colleagues; her other specialties include cognitive behavioral therapy, couples counseling, and effective and scientifically supported non-medication treatments for depression, anxiety, BPD and other mental health conditions.
