NASW NYC Nursing Home Committee Update

The Nursing Home committee of the New York City Chapter of NASW is one of the long-standing committees of the Chapter. The committee consists of social workers employed in various long-term care facilities in New York City, including in public, proprietary and voluntary auspices, as well as representatives from consumer organizations and the New York City Department for the Aging.

The Nursing Home committee has helped to organize a joint NASW Committee meeting which will be held at Hunter College School Work at 6 pm on May 2nd.

This event, in honor of Older Americans Month, is co-sponsored, along with the Nursing Home Committee, by the Chapter's Health Policy and Practice Network, Gerontological Social Work Committee and the Home Care Network.

Guest speakers for this meeting, which will focus on clinical practice as well as empowering older Americans and social workers, include Amy West, Joint Public Affairs Committee (JPAC) Director, Sharon Goodstein, Director of Social Work Visiting Nurse Service of Brooklyn and Lycia McBee, Assistant Director of Social Work, Jewish Home & Hospital, Manhattan Division.

On November 1,2001 the Nursing Home committee held its Annual Meeting with the New York State Department of Health Surveillance staff. The presenters at this meeting were Myrtle Pinkett, Training Corrdination, New York Department of Health and Lois Schramm, a Social Work Consultant. The meeting focused on social workers and their role in insuring that the government regulations written on behalf of the nursing home patients are complied with and that the social work profession continues to practice effectively in the long-term came facility setting.

On March 19, 2002, the Nursing Home committee conducted a meeting, which focused on bringing health care providers together in the continuum of care in long-term care dialogue.

The presenters included a representative from the HCA/MDA (Health Care Admission/Marketing Directors Associations, as well as Yvette Rolon, President of the Society for Social Work Administrators in Health Care and Marianne Kennedy Director of Nursing Facility Relations for Visiting Nurse Service.
