The Carroll Kowal Journalism Award, presented annually to a journalist whose work enhances the public's awareness of social conditions in New York City, was given on March 22, 2001 to Someni Sengupta, for her article, "Youths Leaving Foster Care System With Few Skills or Resources", which appeared in The New York Times, March 28, 2000. The event was held at Lighthouse International.
The Kowal Award, created in 1991 by the New York City Chapter of NASW to honor the memory of Carroll Kowal, an outstanding social worker, is now sponsored by the Fund For the Advancement of Social Services (FASS), a group of professionals from several disciplines dedicated to promoting research, publicity and advocacy which advances the important role of social services in society.
FASS invites nominations for the Year 2002 Kowal Award. Articles that inform and enlighten the public about any aspect of social services (including welfare reform, child welfare services, aging, mental health issues, etc) in New York City which appeared in print between October 1, 2000 and September 30, 2001 are eligible for submission. Please send nominations (including a copy of the article and a brief statement citing reasons for nominating) to Dr. Elaine Walsh, Chair, Award Jury, FASS, 225 East 79th Street, Suite 13B, New York, NY 10021. Nominations are due by OCTOBER 15, 2001.
