The Peer Consultation Committee was established in 1979 by the New York City Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers to provide confidential assistance to social workers concerned with their own alcohol or drug problems or those of a colleague, friend or family member. Committee members are social workers with expertise in the treatment of alcohol and drug dependency.
The use of alcohol and other drugs by some individuals creates problems for themselves and the people around them. These problems are seen in interpersonal relationships, social functioning, job performance and physical disability. Social workers are no exception.
Denial prevents the alcohol or drug abuser from realizing the effects on his or her behavior. Family and friends are often aware of the problems first and become concerned as they see symptoms multiply. An outside viewpoint can be of special importance in helping the alcohol or drug abuser to get help sooner.
The NASW Code of Ethics states that a social worker who has direct knowledge of a social work colleague's impairment due to personal problems, psychosocial distress, substance abuse, or mental health difficulties should consult with that colleague and assist the colleague in taking remedial action.
There is no longer a stigma in having the illness. Alcohol and drug dependency can be arrested with timely treatment.
WE CAN HELP YOU:
- if you are concerned about your own use of alcohol or other drugs;
- if you are concerned about the use of alcohol or other drugs by a social work colleague;
- if you are concerned about a friend's or family member's use of alcohol or other drugs;
- if you are concerned about how alcohol or other drugs affected your family of origin.
WE ARE AVAILABLE:
- to discuss your concerns;
- to help you evaluate the situation;
- to give information about the kind of help available.
All calls are handled by a confidential answering system. Your call will be returned by a committee member within 24 hours.
The Peer Consultation Committee has no disciplinary powers and is completely confidential.
