Scholarships

Lyons

NASW seeks applicants for the Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial Scholarship. One $2,000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2000-2001 academic year to a social work student enrolled in an accredited master's program. Priority will go to a candidate who has demonstrated academic ability (grade point average of 3.0 or above), interest or demonstrated experience in health/mental health practice and a commitment to work in African American communities.

Completed applications must be received by Feb. 14, 2000.

The scholarship fund was established shortly after the 1989 death of Lyons, a long-time NASW national staff member who worked on health-related issues. It is intended to continue his work for improved health care for African Americans. Applications will be mailed in November to schools of social work nationwide, and are available upon request.

Gosnell

NASW's Gosnell Memorial Scholarship Panel is accepting applications from social work graduate students for scholarships to be awarded during the 2000-2001 academic year. The Gosnell fund, established according to wishes in a bequest by Consuelo Gosnell, aims to encourage the profession's interest in the Native American and Hispanic populations and in public and voluntary nonprofit agencies.

Completed application packets must be received by Mar. 1, 2000.

Along with basic biographical information and an undergraduate academic transcript, a candidate must submit evidence of application to or acceptance by an accredited graduate social work program, an essay documenting need for the scholarship, and at least three letters of support for the application from teachers, former employers or other professional associates.

If you are interested in applying for one of the scholarships, call 1 (800) 638-8799 ext. 337. Please leave a message with your name and address along with the scholarship you are interested in on the voice mail. An application will be mailed to you.
