Settings which employ social workers are often busy and stressful, and interpersonal conflict among employees from that stress can contribute to burnout, resentment and turnover. Research shows that organizations in various industries who worked with their staff using DISC assessment tools, to better understand conflict, have seen improvements in the way those conflicts were handled among employees.

 

The DISC assessment is a behavioral assessment tool that was created by psychologist William Moulton Marston. An acronym based on the four personality and behavioral styles it measures (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness), this tool uses patterns of behavior to understand those behaviors in the workplace.

 

This workshop will present how DISC can be understood with specific emphasis on the unique challenges of social work settings. The presenter will discuss how it impacts social work practice, the different ways this tool can resolve conflict and increase productivity while working in teams, as well as cover ways understanding the different DISC personalities can apply to any group work, including work with clients. 

 

 

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what the DISC assessment is and how to use it to understand colleagues and direct reports' behavior and learning styles
  • Identify their own behavior styles within the DISC framework

  • Learn how to work most effectively with colleagues and manage teams who have different behavior styles

Ashley Owen Santangelo, LMSW, CPCC has been a Licensed Master Social Worker in New York since 2012. She graduated from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and has previously worked in administrative, clinical and/or supervisory capacities for Vibrant Emotional Health (formerly MHA of NYC), Safe Horizon and New York University. In 2014 she received her Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) certification from NYU and in 2017, she completed a certification course in career coaching through the Professional Association of Resume Writers & Career Coaches. Through this course Ms. Santangelo was introduced to frameworks, such as the DISC assessment, that she found applicable to many settings that employ social workers.

 

Presently, Ms. Santangelo is the Team Leader for the New York Council on Problem Gambling's Problem Gambling Resource Center and operates a small career coaching practice named Evolve Services. Ashley is excited to share information about the DISC to colleagues in the profession and looks forward to facilitating a dialogue about how we as social workers can not only be champions for clients, but for our own workplaces as well. 

  

 


 

NASW-NYC Certificates Policy

 

As per New York State Continuing Education guidelines, attendees must arrive on time and attend the ENTIRE workshop to receive their Continuing Education Contact Hours. Any attendees who arrive late or leaves early to a workshop will not receive their certificate, is not allowed admittance into the workshop and is also not eligible for a refund in any way. Please check transportation schedules ahead of time and plan accordingly.

 

We are currently transitioning from providing paper certificates to electronic ones. Please ensure that your registration information is accurate (name, e-mail, license type and number) as this will impact your continuing education certificates. NASW-NYC is not responsible for the accuracy of your registration information. To receive your certificate of completion, on the workshop date, please sign-in with your time and before you leave, sign-out with your time. Please allow up to 30 calendar days after the workshop date to receive your certificate.

 

 

NASW-NYC Refund Policy

 

All refund requests must be submitted by e-mail to workshops.naswnyc@socialworkers.orgRefund e-mails must include the subject line "Refund Request" as well as the attendee's name, workshop date and title in the body of the e-mail. Valid requests must be received no later than five business days prior to course date. NASW-NYC reserves the right to refuse any refunds requested later than five days prior to the course date.

 

All refunds are subject to a $20.00 administrative processing fee.

Refund requests typically require 1-2 weeks processing time.

Refunds ONLY; credit cannot be issued toward a future program date or substituted for another workshop.

 

If the workshop is cancelled, you will be informed ahead of time and fully refunded.
