The reality of perinatal mood disorders had escaped assessment, detection, research and treatment in this country, despite the evidence that up to 20% of new mothers will experience a serious affective disruption in the perinatal period. As a result of emerging research, legislative efforts and understanding of untreated maternal mood disorders on infant, family and community, attention has finally become fixed on this public health crisis. As social workers are frequently charged with assessment and treatment of these disorders across a variety of practice settings, it is crucial for them to understand the incidence, symptoms, risk factors, available treatments and consequences of untreated maternal mental health issues. There is a disproportionate representation of serious peri and postpartum mood disorders in economically disadvantaged, minority and immigrant populations, while no socio economic group escapes its effects. Using lecture, slides and video, this presentation will provide an overview of the issue, the spectrum of perinatal mood disorders, available treatments and current legislative mandates and impending policy changes.
