Hello to all-

Each of us is struggling to navigate this unprecedented time of uncertainty and worry as COVID-19 rapidly unfolds. Schools have closed. Social distancing is underway. And news continues to unsettle our own and our collective experience. Some remember the years of AIDS loss, some the time of Ebola. All of us anticipate future change with broad challenges ahead.

Please join a phone meeting of the Disaster Trauma Committee this Friday, March 20, 9 to 11 am. We will have an opportunity to speak together as new realities emerge, and as we consider social work during pandemic, with wide-ranging impact. Our own experiences, those of the communities with whom we work, and the unique settings in which we work will be discussed. Practical issues, inequities revealed, and existential considerations will be included in our exchange, as we underline our social justice commitments, and our connections offer support. Importantly, we will acknowledge the creative resourcefulness and bold resilience each of us brings to this time, even as we struggle to create meaning and hold on to hope.

For a call-in number to join this meeting, please send an RSVP at All social workers are invited.

Madelyn Miller, PhD, LCSW, chair, Disaster Trauma Committee, NYC-NASW

The Disaster Trauma Committee, NYC-NASW, holds meetings bimonthly to recognize social workers’ interest and experience in the diversity of disaster work, and to offer continuing learning and collegial support. Presentations focus on disasters within a global context, related collective trauma and loss issues as they intersect with resourcefulness and resiliency, and attention to the inevitable impact on social workers of immediate and long-term disaster work. Madelyn Miller, PhD, LCSW, chairperson.
