With the increasing evidence of risk in the workplace, staying safe as a human services professional is crucial at all times. This workshop will offer practical ideas to de-escalate risk, the warning signs of risk in the field of social work and human services, and how to protect one’s self while doing one’s job.

 

Using a mix of small-group discussion, interactive polls and PowerPoint lecture, the presentation will be based on principles of non-violent intervention, Guidelines and Safety Tips for Social Workers, and the prevention of workplace violence. Personal, office, environmental and field issues will be examined to ensure that all situations are as risk-free as possible.

 

Participants will leave the program with clear and concrete tools for their toolbox to ensure they stay safe at work.

 

 

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least one (1) step in crisis intervention and at least one (1) effective response to a crisis
  • Grasp specific, detailed ways to stay safe in the social work workplace
  • Detail the levels of personal, environmental and organizational safety interventions in the workplace
  • Design organizational best practices in safety management

Benjamin R. Sher, MA, LMSW is currently the Director of the Office of Global and Lifelong Learning at the New York University (NYU) Silver School of Social Work. Prior to this position, Ben held numerous titles at the Institute for Community Living, Inc., (ICL), including as a Program Director overseeing mental health residential services, and then Director of Training and Staff Development.

 

In addition to this work, Ben has been an Adjunct Instructor with Metropolitan College of New York in the School for Public Administration and Public Affairs, CUNY/Queensborough Community College and the NYU Silver School of Social Work. At these schools, he has taught classes on research, program evaluation, organizational development, grant-writing, human behavior in the workplace and social work practice.

 

Ben just completed his term as President of the Board of Directors at the National Association of Social Workers, New York City Chapter (NASW-NYC). Ben has presented at numerous conferences on mental health, program development, succession management, re-tooling staff development initiatives and clinical practices in residential settings. He published a chapter on “Social Work and Mentoring” in the book, Hope Matters: The Power of Social Work, published by NASW Press. In 2016, Ben was awarded the title of Adjunct Associate Instructor for his long tenure of fieldwork supervision of NYU social work students.

NASW-NYC Certificates Policy


As per New York State Continuing Education guidelines, attendees must arrive on time and attend the ENTIRE workshop to receive their Continuing Education Contact Hours. Any attendees who arrive late or leaves early to a workshop will not receive their certificate, is not allowed admittance into the workshop and is also not eligible for a refund in any way. 


Please ensure that your registration information is accurate as this may impact your continuing education certificates.  NASW-NYC is not responsible for the accuracy of your registration information. To receive your certificate of completion, you must be present for the entire webinar and complete an evaluation.


 

NASW-NYC Refund Policy


All refund requests must be submitted by e-mail to accounting.naswnyc@socialworkers.org. Refund e-mails must include the subject line "Refund Request" as well as the attendee's name, workshop date and title in the body of the e-mail. Valid requests must be received no later than three business days prior to course date. NASW-NYC reserves the right to refuse any refunds requested later than three days prior to the course date.

  • All refunds are subject to a 30% administrative processing fee.
  • Refund requests typically require 1-2 weeks processing time.
  • Refunds ONLY; credit cannot be issued toward a future program date or substituted for another workshop.


If the workshop is cancelled, you will be informed ahead of time and fully refunded.
