Cyber-Bullying: Aggression in the Digital Age

A Presentation Sponsored by the NASW-NYC LGBTQ Committee

Elizabeth “Liz” Lasky, LCSW, 2010 NASW-NYC Emerging Leader and Counselor at the Relationship Abuse Prevention Program (RAPP) of the Center Against Domestic Violence, made a presentation on January 19th to the NASW- NYC membership in an event sponsored by the NASW-NYC LGBTQ Committee as a component of its quarterly programming. The presentation – Cyber-Bullying: Aggression in the Digital Age – was held in the Chapter office in Manhattan and focused on the practice challenges and opportunities encountered in addressing this growing social problem which has invaded all sectors of modern life and demographic groups.

Ms. Lasky stressed that technology changes daily, and therefore it is critical that social workers stay abreast of these changes. Educating clients on responsible use of technology is critical to stemming the issue of cyber-bullying. Liz invited all of the participants to partner with her and other professionals working on this very real social challenge to improve the professional knowledge base and decrease the incidents of this problem for future generations.

Liz’s interest, research and practice in addressing issues of bullying and domestic violence with teens has evolved from her work at RAPP which provides education, prevention and intervention around teen dating violence in New York City schools. As a social justice issue, the professional community has a duty to educate both the perpetrator and the victim on the dynamics of potential abuse and individual responsibilities related to use of technology.

The event was very well subscribed with over 60 individuals in attendance. Participants ranged included MSW students, professional social workers, school administrators and interested members of the community at large. The LGBTQ Committee plans programming which is sensitive to LGBTQ issues, and where possible, of interest to the larger social work community. All NASW-NYC members are invited to attend our quarterly meetings.
