In Positive Psychology, the focus is on mental health, rather than mental illness. In this perspective, clinicians strive to help clients build their personal strengths and resilience, instead of dwelling on pathology.

The specific characteristics of people with positive sensibilities will be identified, along with the strategies for cultivating and experiencing authentic happiness and other positive emotional states. This course will examine the theoretical basis behind the positive psychology movement, the extensive research in support of the model, and the many applications of positive psychology to everyday life.

Attendees in this course should come to understand how to live life purposely, and to create happy, richer and more meaningful lives for themselves and their clients with direct strategies.

Currently, positive psychology has evolved from its narrow focus on positive emotions, positive traits to positive psychology 2.0 which focuses on the totality of the person and the positive potentials in both positive and negative conditions.

Reji Mathew, PhD, LCSW is a Senior Clinical Social Worker at New York University, Student Health Center and an Adjunct Associate Professor for NYU School of Social Work.
