Practicing or Just Preaching? Self-care for Addiction Professionals
Dr. Deborah Teplow
Co-founder and CEO, Institute for Wellness Education
Working as an addiction professional can be challenging and rewarding. There also can be significant obstacles; and the challenges can seem overwhelming. For many professionals, the reward side of the equation is diminishing. Instead, burn-out is the feeling at the end of the day, not satisfaction and reward.
Self-care is not selfish. It's a professional responsibility for doing well for your clients. It not only helps you respond to burnout, it can help prevent it, so you can be fully present for the people you serve.
Modeling good self-care is good for you and good for everyone around you, including clients. That's because the principles of self-care are the same as for recovery, exemplified by Recovery-oriented Systems of Care (ROSC). These shared principles promote an approach that is person-centered and strengths-based; and marshals individual, social, and environmental factors that support well-being. These principles go far beyond narrow goals, such as abstinence for clients or managing stress for professionals. The principles help turn surviving into thriving.
This workshop will help you look at self-care from a new perspective, from the perspective of behavior design. Behavior, including good self-care, doesn't happen randomly. And, it's not just a matter of motivation. Through demonstrations and exercises, you will walk away with practical-and powerful-tools you can put into immediate use that will profoundly impact your ability to take care of the most important person for personal and professional success: you!
We are looking forward to seeing everyone. Invite someone.
As always, registration and RSVPs are not required. 2.0 CASAC hours will be awarded to all attendees. SW CEs and LMHC hours are not given.
Also, we would like to bring to your attention the Chapter's Call to Action. Assembly Member Luis Sepulveda has introduced the Racial Equity Bill (AB 5851) that proposes the addition of a Racial Equity Impact Assessment (REIA) Committee to evaluate the potential harm and ensure fiscal and environmental protections in the face of limited resources. This assessment can be a vital tool for preventing institutional racism and for identifying new options to remedy long-standing inequities.
We call upon you to contact your Assembly Member to support establishing this Legislative Committee. When you do remember to introduce yourself as a constituent, reference bill AB.5851, and its intent. Finally, don't forget to ask your member to join as a co-sponsor of the legislation immediately!

Please watch your emails for more information about the work that your Chapter is doing and how you can get involved!
