This workshop is for social workers working with formally incarcerated clients or families of formerly incarcerated persons. This workshop will explore the emotional, social, and legal challenges confronting men and women who have been released from prison and are attempting to successfully integrate themselves back into the larger society.  Issues regarding self-esteem, isolation, alienation, the consequences of labeling, and goal setting and attainment will be discussed in the context of social policy, such as Broken Window Theory, parole restrictions, Invisible Punishments, Stop & Frisk, and other policies both written and unwritten. Nationwide, approximately 66% of all incarcerated people will return to prison; we will address why this percentage is so high and what successful social work interventions can dramatically lower this number.  This workshop is designed to be interactive and will encourage participation.

Carl Mazza, DSW, LMSW, ACSW is an Associate Professor & Chair of the Social Work Department at Lehman College of the City University of New York.  Additionally, Mr. Mazza is an author and lecturer on various aspects of criminal and juvenile justice, with thirty five years post masters experience working in prisons and with incarcerated people and their families.
