Fathers are often treated with suspicion in the child welfare system and stigmatized as absent (even when living within the same borough) or as perpetrator while attention is well-paid to the maternal role. In private practices there is a growing focus on therapists specializing in maternal mental health, the challenges of getting & remaining pregnant, as well as caring for children. New male partners for mothers are often looked at skeptically as well.Structurally, agency paperwork can often have a father or male role separate from the family constellation. Fathers of Color are called out on a national stage to be more present—all while little or no attention is being paid to the systemic racism and environments that these fathers are a part of.
This presentation will challenge many of the myths that are part of many social service agencies. Biases will be looked at to make clear how the racism, sexism, and classism from a macro perspective can easily seep into direct practice. Strategies for creative engagement and language shifts will be explored, as will the concern of how a focus on fathers does not mean a move toward reinforcing a sexism in a society that often undervalues female and trans* parents.
This course can apply to any social workers and LMFTs who work with children and families, including but not limited to:
- school social workers, clinicians/therapists, private practitioners, family therapists
