It has been estimated that for every person who has a substance problem there are at least 2-3 others who are affected. These others can include spouses and partners, siblings, parents, friends, co-workers, and many others.
This workshop will initially cover how families and significant others are affected when there is a person with a substance abuse problem in their lives. It will review terms that are commonly used but are lacking any evidence of being beneficial, as well as cover approaches and techniques that can be used to engage and facilitate change with families and significant others.
In addition, links to free resources and information will be provided.
With this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explicate the effects of substance abuse on others
- Develop awareness of commonly used terms that lack evidence of being helpful
- Comprehend a range of techniques and approaches with evidence of usefulness in helping those who are affected by a substance abused in their family or relationship
- Utilize free support materials that will be reviewed and provided during the session
