Closed adoptions and lack of post-adoption supports for birth parents and adoptive families have caused adoption triad members to have relinquishment trauma, grief, and identity issues. Years of unresolved grief, rejection, shame come to the surface when relatives meet in reunions. With the Internet and DNA testing, birth relatives and adopted persons are finding each other quicker than ever before without the preparation and supports in place for emotional reunions with their relatives.

The workshop will discuss the complexities of adoption search and reunions and the social worker’s role with working with their clients. Information on how closed adoptions and non-evidenced based adoption practices have set the stage for adoption triad members to have traumatic life experiences which compounds stressful search and reunions will be presented. This workshop will include information on the reasons a person does a search, helping an individual to prepare for a reunion, understanding the complexities of reunions, therapy considerations, and characteristics of successful reunion relationships.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Know the reasons an individual does a search and a reunion
  • Learn about society, adoption practices, and extended family influences on adoption triad members and reunion relationship

  • Learn about the complexities of reunion relationships including trauma and genetic sexual attraction

  • Name key factors of successful reunion relationships

  • Learn about the social worker’s role in helping clients with their search, reunion, and therapy considerations
