Managerialism is characterized by output-orientated, quantitative-focused, performance-based measures and evidence-based practice. These characteristics, widely referred to as “the business model”, have impacted the workforce in human service organizations.
Using qualitative semi-structured interviews, the facilitator researched and explored the nature of changes and the ways in which Managerialism did and did not affect the organization of services, direct practice with clients, and the quality of care within substance abuse programs. With increased emphasis on the bottom line, higher demands for productivity and accountability, measuring performance outcomes, and less time for clients – workers reported that this integration of the “business model” was more troublesome than not.
This workshop will focus on the outcomes of the facilitator’s research, as well as conversation and dialogue with fellow attendees, to grapple the changes impacting the work environment. A greater understanding of the effect of Managerialism on the human service workforce will provide attendees with ways to reduce stress, bridge the gap between policy standards and clinical practice, and encourage practitioners and program directors to seek policy change.
With this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Have a better understanding of Managerialism and how it is operationalized
- Identify the rationale for Managerialism which may help in the transition for such policies
- Be able to discuss and learn from peers about useful transition and management of new policy trends
- Discuss ways in which supervision or other systematic organization responses could be useful under Managerialism to reduce worker stress and improve quality of care and service delivery
