Only two weeks ago, as we last met, we spoke the names of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor- their young ages, their moment in life, where they were when they were murdered- filled with deep sadness and incensed at this loss of life, this injustice, violence, and violation. Within days, we learned George Floyd was murdered on a street in Minneapolis- the relentless nature of systemic racism, centuries old. We watched his last breaths, heard his plea to his mother- and we were shaken to the core, overcome, crying, heartbroken, enraged. Immediately, we remembered Eric Garner. We thought back to Philandro Castile. To so many others whose names we know. And we imagine George Floyd, a close friend, a loving brother, a dear uncle. We are grief stricken. Perhaps more so now that we can allow our feelings, their depth. Joining the privacy of his family’s memorial, we mourn as a community, as protesters grow in number and continue to express their voices amidst increased militarization, framed by COVID-19, and by this administration. And we struggle to turn helplessness and despair into action that will feel as impactful as we wish it to be, that will express our hopefulness. In solidarity, with support among colleagues, we can encourage each other’s continuing racial and social justice efforts, initiatives, and outreach, and stay propelled forward in the urgency of this moment.
