Hello to all-
On the anniversary of the murder of Eric Garner, and as we acknowledge the 140,000 individuals who have died over the last months in the US from COVID-19, with deep sadness we also mourn the death of Congressman John Lewis.
His life-long civil rights and non-violence activism, his courage to sit-in and stand-up for racial and social justice across the decades in the midst of danger, risking safety for his principled decisions, and most recently his standing in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, have each expressed his steadfast commitments, integrity, leadership, and moral imagination. We can hold his wish for the beloved community as a ray of hope as we move forward with self-reflection and anti-racist work.
Please join colleagues at the next meeting of the Disaster Trauma Committee to continue our conversation on Social Work during the Pandemics of COVID-19 and Systemic Racism, this Friday, July 24, 9 to 11 am, via Zoom.
See you then- Madelyn Miller
The Disaster Trauma Committee, NYC-NASW, holds meetings to recognize social workers’ interest and experience in the diversity of disaster work, providing continuing learning and collegial support. Presentations focus on disasters within a global context, related collective trauma and collective loss issues as they intersect with resourcefulness and resiliency, and attention to the inevitable impact on social workers of immediate and long-term disaster work.
