Join the NASW-NYC Chapter's next B.O.L.D talk where we discuss the 2020 presidential election results and bring calls to action for all social workers to advance social justice and democracy!  

 

Featuring commentary from social work leaders and allies in political advocacy, we will highlight ways in which we all can engage politically to help dismantle racism and structural oppression throughout society.

Dr. Damary Bonilla-Rodriguez is a national leading authority on leadership development, especially as it pertains to diversity and inclusion.  She delivers keynote addresses and presentations drawing upon her experience from roles in the non-profit, private, and government sectors, as well as her doctoral research.  Her research about Latina leadership in the United States has served as the foundation for events, conference sessions, publications, and content development - to address the urgency of leadership development for a fast-growing population and create a pipeline of diverse leaders. 

 

Dr. Bonilla-Rodriguez holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and Social Work from the College of New Rochelle where she received the College President’s Medal, graduated with Departmental Honors, and was awarded the Sigma Delta Pi Spanish Award.  She also holds a Master of Science degree in Organizational Communications and a Specialized Certification in Corporate Communications, both from the College of New Rochelle.  Personal endeavors of overcoming statistics and accessing higher education, led her to earn a Doctorate in Education focusing on Executive Leadership from St. John Fisher College. 

 

To change the political and leadership landscape for Latinos, Dr. Bonilla-Rodriguez ran for State Representative in the 189th District of Pennsylvania in the 2016 election cycle where she became the 1st Hispanic to make a State ballot in Pike and Monroe Counties. In November 2019, she became the 1st Hispanic elected as School Board Director in the East Stroudsburg Area School District. Passionate about supporting professional organizations, she is a Board Member of the Brodhead Watershed Association, Prospanica NY, Latina VIDA, Latinas on the Plaza, and Los Compadres Modern Caballero and an advisory board member for several organizations including: The Board of Hispanic Caucus Chairs and the Alliance for Positive Youth Development. In addition, she was appointed by Governor Tom Wolf to represent the Poconos Region on statewide commissions on Redistricting Reform and Latino affairs (GACLA).

 

Dr. Bonilla-Rodriguez was recognized as a 2014 Coors Light Lideres finalist and the recipient of numerous awards including a proclamation from the NYS Assembly, the Proud to Be Latina Soy Poderosa award, and the SISGI Beyond Good Ideas Excellence in Nonprofit Leadership award. Her published written accomplishments include the books Ethics, Gender, and Leadership in the Workplace and Today’s Inspired Latina (Volume II), as well as contributing to the Huffington Post and being featured by several media outlets including NBC Latino, Chief Writing Wolf, and the Empowered Latinas series. 

 

 

 

Luisa Lopez, MSW serves as Director of Digital Media to Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. 

 

As a trained social worker, she began her career in public service as a direct practice family support worker at a home visiting parenting program in Washington Heights, focused on helping young mothers and pregnant teens to navigate resources available to them, as well as preventing child abuse and neglect. In this role Luisa was able to serve as an advocate for children and families on issues surrounding equitable access to social services, childhood learning and development, poverty and income support, mental health parity, and immigration reform. She went on to serve as a policy fellow at the office of Congressman Jose E. Serrano and Chief of Staff at the New York City Council.

 

Luisa holds a Master of Social Work from the New York University Silver School of Social Work. She currently serves as President of Board of the Latino Social Work Coalition, where she continues to advocate for increased civic and electoral engagement among social workers as means to empower citizens to address social, economic, and political conditions. 

 

 

Teresa Hernandez is a proud, third generation Boricua from the Bronx. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Marymount Manhattan College with a major in English Literature and Secondary Education where she graduated with honors. Teresa later pursued a career in healthcare management. She went on to complete her MBA at Mercy College. Teresa is currently the Quality, Equity and Safety Administrator at NYU Langone Health.

 

               In 2019, Teresa was the Executive Vice President of Prospanica New York.

               Along with the New York Chapter President and New York Board members, she helped lead the way for the chapter to be recognized and earn the 2019 Chapter of the Year Award.

                In 2020, Teresa became the President of the New York Chapter.

 

Teresa also joined the Leaders of Color Initiative (LOCI) Education Reform Now and became a fellow in 2020. LOCI is a program that recruits people of color for public office. These leaders are respected in their communities and are provided a suite of resources to help win elections and increase their influence.

 

Teresa is an advocate for equal education, fair and better access to healthcare for people of color. She strongly believes in creating and maintaining a culture where people from all backgrounds feel included in the workplace and beyond. She is also a coach and mentor to individuals at early to mid-career levels as well as college students who are completing their bachelor’s and/or master’s degree.

 

 

Adeline Medeiros, LMSW serves as treasurer of the NASW-NYC PACE Steering Committee, which is the official 501(c)(4) political arm of the NASW-NYC Chapter. Adeline is also the Bronx Borough Director at Power of Two, a non-profit organization which gives children a foundation for success in school and life by fostering a strong and healthy attachment between parent and child.
