Current research, including Dr. Brené Brown's work in shame and vulnerability, and Dr. Kristin Neff's work in Mindful Self-Compassion, has shed light on the impact of shame and negative self-talk on our mental health. Simply attending a therapy session can be shame-inducing and oftentimes, clients in therapy sessions feel vulnerable due to disclosure, shame as they explore challenging feelings, and might even feel marginalized due to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, or even their diagnosis.

This presentation will explore traditional evidence-based clinical practices along with current evidence-based clinical practices, and how as clinicians we can reduce the impact of shame with our clients, as well as use a client-centered approach to improve therapeutic outcomes. Using borderline personality disorder (BPD) as a main example, this presentation will focus on how evidence-based practices, specifically Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), can integrate shame resilience techniques and be enhanced to reduce the stigma of a lifetime diagnosis while continuing to target the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are symptomatic of a diagnosis. This presentation will also focus on other areas of stigma, including race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and socioeconomic status.

By reducing shame in our practices and approaches with clients, we support clients in increasing motivation for receiving effective treatment, reducing stigma, and improving treatment outcomes. As providers, we can make a difference by inherently improving the quality of life for clients we serve. By increasing shame resilience, we are improving our clients’ use of skills to reduce instances of self-harm, explosive anger, emotional mood swings, as well as improving stable relationships, including the relationship built with the clinician.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify language and therapeutic techniques that potentially increase feelings of shame in our clients
  • Know how to integrate evidence-based practices, such as DBT and CBT, with building shame resilience
  • Identify interventions for increasing shame resilience
  • Implement interventions regarding mindfulness and self-compassion
  • Identify potential areas of marginalization and shame in clients, such as diagnosis, race, ethnicity, gender, gender identification, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status
