Research has proven that psychotherapy is effective and despite hundreds of treatment models, no model has proven superior. Why? This workshop will provide an overview of the psychotherapy research literature and explore the common factors found in all effective psychotherapies.

This workshop will introduce the common factors paradigm, review specific common factors, and explore ways to incorporate them into the participant’s work, as well as address the evolving need for a culturally competent practice as an essential part of using the common factors approach. Many psychotherapy models have basic assumptions and practices that disenfranchise Cultural/racial/ethnic/economic groups and result in treatment failure and the demoralization of clients. The common factors approach requires a strong focus on who the client is and how the clinician will form a meaningful connection with them.

The “common factors” examination of psychotherapy has been in existence for over 30 years and has a lot to offer clinicians in conducting effective psychotherapy with their clients. Understanding these factors will make the practice of psychotherapy more effective, adaptable and inclusive.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Describe what the common factors paradigm is
• Recognize specific common factors and identify ways to apply them in work with clients
• Identify the need to routinely start with the client’s cultural understanding and response to their problems

Douglas Behan, DSW, LCSW is the Director of Continuing Education and an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice at the Rutgers School of Social Work. He has over 30 years of experience in a variety of social work settings in the roles of clinician, administrator, and professor.

At Rutgers he manages a large continuing education program, teaches, and oversees the curriculum for the advanced Clinical Social Work II course. His areas of interest include the common factors of effective psychotherapy and therapy with families and individuals experiencing severe physical illnesses. He has presented at numerous regional, national, and international conferences.

NASW-NYC Certificates Policy

As per New York State Continuing Education guidelines, attendees must arrive on time and attend the ENTIRE workshop to receive their Continuing Education Contact Hours. Any attendees who arrive late or leaves early to a workshop will not receive their certificate, is not allowed admittance into the workshop and is also not eligible for a refund in any way. 

Please ensure that your registration information is accurate as this may impact your continuing education certificates.  NASW-NYC is not responsible for the accuracy of your registration information. To receive your certificate of completion, you must be present for the entire webinar and complete an evaluation.

NASW-NYC Refund Policy

All refund requests must be submitted by e-mail to accounting.naswnyc@socialworkers.org. Refund e-mails must include the subject line "Refund Request" as well as the attendee's name, workshop date and title in the body of the e-mail. Valid requests must be received no later than three business days prior to course date. NASW-NYC reserves the right to refuse any refunds requested later than three days prior to the course date.

• All refunds are subject to a 30% administrative processing fee.
• Refund requests typically require 1-2 weeks processing time.
• Refunds ONLY; credit cannot be issued toward a future program date or substituted for another workshop.

If the workshop is cancelled, you will be informed ahead of time and fully refunded.
