Social work is built upon a foundation of social justice and advocacy, yet many social workers and other helping professions do not see themselves as advocates. The social work profession has been called to explore our role in both helping and harming the communities we are charged to serve.

Participants will have the opportunity to understand the intersection among social justice, oppression, and social work practice. Through exploring our role and compliancy in racial and social injustice, we will delve into the clinical and legal implications. We will also learn how to use the social work code of ethics as a guide to effectively engage action, drive social change, and confront isms and apathy within the profession and ourselves.

Explore the history and role of oppression, racism, and apathy in social work. Learn how this landscape impacts social work practice (micro, mezzo, and macro) as well as creates social justice divides for those whom we serve.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explore internalized beliefs, culture biases, and understand how these areas shape advocacy agendas, assessment, practice and policy
  • Gain techniques to effectively engage their peers, students and colleagues in building coalition and work towards social justice and inclusion in social work education, policy, and practice
  • Understand how to use the social work code of ethics as a guide to effectively engage action, drive social change, and confront isms and apathy within the profession and ourselves
  • Name some clinical and legal implications through exploring the role and compliancy in racial and social injustice
