Positive Psychology is a strengths-based, evidence-based clinical approach that applies clinical strategies to promote positive emotional states, resilience, and positive coping. Currently, positive psychology has evolved from initially focusing on positive traits to focusing on the totality of the person, as well as the positive potentials of coping in both positive and negative conditions.

With this model, clinicians strive to help clients build their personal strengths, and articulate a vision for a meaningful life through the PERMA model. This course will provide a theoretical basis behind the positive psychology movement, the extensive research in support of the model, and clinical strategies that can be applied to everyday life challenges. Many outpatient social work settings are in need of innovative approaches to reach clients with complex needs, this evidence-based perspective will provide accessible, tangible tools to clinicians to promote resilience, mental wellness, and happiness in clients.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the main themes of Positive Psychology and understand both its strengths and its limitations
  • Develop an understanding of the application of positive psychology clinical interventions to enhance, happiness, resilience, and meaning
  • Identify methods to utilize positive interventions in a professional setting of their choosing, such as outpatient clinics, private practice, coaching, education, and healthcare
