In partnership with New York City Commission on Human Rights, this free, three-hour workshop provides a historical context of race and color-based discrimination, institutional and structural racism, and how it has impacted the lives of New Yorkers and the delivery of services and resources in New York City. Key terms, such as race, racialization, and white supremacy are discussed. The workshop covers racism in New York City throughout history and how New Yorkers have challenged and resisted racist policies and actions. The workshop provides information about protections and remedies against race and color-based discrimination under the City Human Rights Law. Resources, such as the City Human Rights Law, are provided to combat racism and invest in an anti-racist future.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Have knowledge of the history of race and color discrimination in New York City and how it has impacted the lives of New Yorkers and the delivery of services and resources in New York City
• Acquire knowledge about protections against race and color-based discrimination under the City Human Rights Law
• Equipped to recognize racism, and to use their work to dismantle oppression and advance equity and justice
• Identify the New York City Commission of Human Rights as a resource for clients who have encountered discrimination, harassment and bias

Christelle N. Onwu, MSW is the Director of Social Work Unit, Lead Advisor for African Diaspora Communities, and Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the New York City Commission on Human Rights. She was a 2017 graduate of the Coro Immigrant Civic Leadership Program (ICLP) and serves as an Adjunct Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where she teaches courses on Justice in the Africana World and Environmental Racism in the Africana Department. She is a fierce advocate for under-served populations with a focus on African communities in New York City. Christelle is also a 2021 CUP NY Fellow. She earned her bachelor’s degree at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a Masters’ of Science in Social Work Policy at Columbia University School of School Work, where her article titled “Understanding Female Genital Cutting in the United Kingdom within Immigrant Communities” was published in the Social Work Review. She is a proud New Yorker, lives in the Bronx with her family, and hails from Cameroon. She is fluent in French, pidgin, and Eton.

Vanessa Ramos, Esq. is the Managing Director of Education and Compliance of NYC Commission on Human Rights. Prior to joining the Commission, she was the Sr. Director for Policy at the Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, focusing on bilingual education, quality childcare and immigrant rights. In 2013, she was awarded the Dr. Antonia Pantoja Bilingual Education Advocacy Award by the New York State Association for Bilingual Education (NYSABE). She was an international observer in elections in Ecuador and El Salvador. She studied at the University of Puerto Rico, obtaining a BA in Political Science and a juris doctor.

As per New York State Continuing Education guidelines, attendees must arrive on time and attend the ENTIRE workshop to receive their Continuing Education Contact Hours. Any attendees who arrive late or leaves early to a workshop will not receive their certificate, is not allowed admittance into the workshop and is also not eligible for a refund in any way. 

Please ensure that your registration information is accurate as this may impact your continuing education certificates.  NASW-NYC is not responsible for the accuracy of your registration information. To receive your certificate of completion, you must be present for the entire webinar and complete an evaluation.
