Previously, it was believed that living in a larger body was a risk factor for poor health. This usually led to immediate attention on the size of their body rather than identifying the actual health variables that could be at play. For our clients in larger bodies, this means endless, constant efforts to lose weight, even at the expense of their mental (and physical) health. However, recent research has indicated that the constant pursuit of weight loss can have lasting negative impacts on the well-being of those who are exposed to such messaging.
In this presentation, attendees will discover the many ways in which associating body size with health interferes with our clients’ abilities to adequately and appropriately take care of their bodies and minds, and decreases their quality of life. This workshop will review the relevant research on weight science and weight stigma. It will also identify the health messages that generate positive behavior change in our clients, improve overall health outcomes, detangle body image issues, and address the underlying stressors of existing in a larger body in this culture. Attendees will learn effective and research-based strategies to help clients who may be struggling with weight concerns and network with providers looking to do the same.
With this workshop, participants will be able to:
-
Identify the side effects of dieting and impact on our client population
- Recall the ways in which weight bias leads to adverse mental, emotional and physical health effects
- Summarize and interpret the literature supporting Health at Every Size (HAES ®)
- Discuss the weight neutral principles and how to incorporate them into practice
- State the ways in which weight-neutral, non-diet nutrition enhances health
