This 2-hour workshop will teach techniques used in the theater that have been adapted to improve the therapeutic alliance and teach cultural sensitivity through good communication, which is an essential life skill. First developed with groups of primarily BIPOC populations, this program will help avoid stereotyping by using theater to live inside the stories, viewpoints and voices of people/characters who are different than the participant, and learn how to apply cultural sensitivity.
As a former actress and theater director, the presenter will help participants build on the communication skills that as social workers, they already have. Attendees will internalize, practice and observe theater techniques in action, as attendees volunteer themselves to be either the social worker or the client in a scenario, so they may learn how to work deeply and undistracted when with a client, practice active listening and empathy, and ultimately improve the therapeutic alliance with their clients.
With this workshop, participants will be able to:
-
Observe clinical skills that are enhanced by theatre communication techniques.
- Stay in touch with their own need and sense of self so they can professionally assess their client’s story and needs.
- Get rid of distractions before a client appears so that it does not interfere with their therapeutic work.
- Learn active empathy by living inside the story, voice and point of view of another person.
