Abusive Traumatic Bonding (ATB™) is a phenomenon present in many, if not all, cases of Intimate Partner Violence. Intimate Partner Violence can be described as “violence perpetrated by a current or former spouse or partner in an intimate relationship against the other spouse or partner”. Abusive Traumatic Bonding™ (ATB™) is closely related to that cycle of violence and usually begins after the climax stage in the cycle of violence and is solidified during the  honeymoon period. As the cycle of violence progresses, the bond becomes stronger and stronger, until it is almost impossible for the victim to leave. When the victim finally does depart the relationship, a long stage of healing may begin and finally, freedom is possible.

Social workers can play a major role in the recovery process from Abusive Traumatic Bonding ™. This interactive workshop will build on the professional experiences of the participants by strengthening their existing knowledge and skills and providing informative background and progressive innovations. Intimate Partner Violence and Abusive Traumatic Bonding™ will be defined and outlined and concepts such as Power and Control and The Cycle of Violence will be delineated and explained. The interaction of attachment and PTSD in Abusive Traumatic Bonding will also be explored, and countertransference and self-care will be addressed by educational interventions around alternative medicine.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define and describe Abusive Traumatic Bonding™ and how it manifests in relationships where Intimate Partner Violence is present.
  • Know the stages of The Cycle of Violence and how it relates to ATB™.
  • Understand how attachment styles affect Abusive Traumatic Bonding ™.
  • Contemplate how PTSD is related to attachment in Abusive Traumatic Bonding™.
