Harm Reduction is an essential practice for all social workers, especially during times of continued crises. Amidst racial disparities, increasing inequities of a public health pandemic, and widespread misunderstanding of substance use and mental health issues, it is imperative for social workers to have a clear framework to support themselves and those they work with.
“Honor, Respect, and Dignity: Approaching Harm Reduction through a Social Justice Lens” is a two-hour workshop that will provide participants with a familiarity and understanding of the core principles of the Harm Reduction Model. Through experiential learning that will incorporate a location of self-activity, contemplative practices, and a brief history and application of harm reduction principles, participants will begin to learn how to apply a harm reduction lens to their clinical and/or community organizing work. This workshop will also explore and discuss complimentary interventions including Motivational Interviewing and trauma-informed care. There will be a brief opportunity for participants to share case examples and receive peer support and feedback. Participants should come prepared for an interactive workshop that will invite you to self-reflect, engage in partner shares, and larger group shares.
With this workshop, participants will be able to:
-
Understand how substance use treatment in the US connects to harmful racialized drug policies.
- Define harm reduction.
- Increase empathy and curiosity in the working relationship with people who experience stigma.
- Acknowledge any positive change in self and others to honor and celebrate those changes.
