It is estimated that over 15 million Americans are living with severe, life threatening food allergies and according to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), 200,000 people annually require emergency medical care for allergic reactions to food. In 2016, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering & Medicine (NASEM) issued a report which the key findings were: there are no standard food allergy definitions, tests, treatments or intervention strategies; there are no national mandated regulations for how to handle allergens in any public sphere; medical schools do not teach doctors about food allergies; emergency services do not have a standard training on how to respond to a food allergy emergency; and food allergy processed food label laws are unclear. The list of national systems that are fractured, have little to no reliable medical information or have no appropriate intervention strategies. People who have a food allergy diagnosis know that a reaction can kill, triggers are everywhere and that without immediate treatment, anaphylaxis can be fatal. This fact alone leaves many people with food allergies feeling like everything is off limits as they navigate a confusing, fractured systems and are left seeking appropriate care on their own. Clients with food allergies are vulnerable to feelings of self-blame, confusion, powerlessness and hopelessness. For parents of children with food allergies, many times those feelings of powerlessness are transferred to their children. Clients with food allergies are often stuck in a worry cycle, feeling paralyzed, and unlike irrational fears, clients with food allergies must reconcile the fact that exposure to their allergen can have fatal outcomes. Social workers are in a unique position to help clients with food allergies live full lives within a food allergy perspective: to empower them to get the answers they need from medical professionals so they can understand their diagnosis fully, to gather appropriate emotional support, and to connect to reliable resources. With this workshop, attendees will gain deeper insights into their client’s food allergy experiences and acquire the tools to help empower their clients.
With this workshop, participants will be able to:
-
Understand the current food allergy landscape in the United States
- Have a deeper awareness of the food allergic client’s experience – what it’s like to have food allergies or care for a child with food allergies, and the realities of navigating the complex food allergy world
- Learn actionable tools to use immediately with food allergic clients
