While the families of adopted children seek professional services in numbers disproportionately higher than the general population, social workers do not receive sufficient training to understand and help this population. Too many social workers are called upon to help adoptive families without fully understanding their challenges.

In this workshop the presenters will identify the 7 Core Issues of Adoption and how they relate to the developmental stages of adolescence and young adulthood. An integrated model will be given on how psychological, neurological and sociological issues and expectations converge to create a paradigm for thinking about adoption and identify maladaptive behavior as a form of communication. The workshop will teach how to reframe those behaviors as a platform to open up lines of communication and create connectedness, enhancing the practice of new communication strategies and avoiding broken patterns of communication. Practitioners will gain skills in reading the subtext that lies beneath the surface of adopted children's presentation when they enter treatment.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the 7 Core Issues of Adoption
  • Describe The Adoption Paradigm as we outline it
  • Understand the issues that occur for adopted children as different developmental stages
  • Learn to reframe negative behaviors as communications about adoption-related issues
