Many early career clinicians enter the field having been provided a limited view of the history of mental health treatment as a whole. Further, many clinicians lack tangible tools to maintain their own mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being in the face of dehumanizing circumstances. In this workshop, Autistic social worker and spoken word poet Steven T. Licardi will lead participants through an examination of the history of mental health treatment in the United States and the use of poetry as a therapeutic modality.
Poetry provides a unique medium for introspection, self-reflection, and for processing internal experiences. It also has the potential to propose new ways of being in the world and framing a struggle, in ways more playful and empathetic than traditional modalities. Using selective snapshots, Steven will invite clinicians to explore the legacy of mental health treatment and to critically examine the ways in which we each, individually and collectively, continue to contribute to that legacy. Throughout this examination, participants will familiarize themselves with creative writing techniques, such as erasure/blackout poetry, letter writing, list making, and the golden shovel, as a means of empowering individuals and subverting mental health narratives. Participants are asked to come prepared to create and to reflect. The workshop will focus on creative writing, but participants can choose to draw or rely on other means of creative exploration throughout.
With this workshop, participants will be able to:
-
Gain a deeper understanding of the history of mental health treatment in the United States, particularly around social policies and practices.
- Learn how this history lives on in the mental health narratives clinicians operate within and how these narratives intersect with Erikson’s 8 Stages of Psychosocial Development.
- Become familiar with specific poetic techniques that can be used within clinical practice with clients as well as within the clinician’s own personal lives.
- Gain an understanding of how creative writing fits within the framework of Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory of Development, particularly notions around “making meaning”.
