Given the NASW Code of Ethics commitment to lifelong learning and professional development, continuing education for social workers in New York State is an important way for social workers to meet this commitment. Lifelong learning correlates with our professional commitment to being impassioned actors in our work. Professional social workers know that seeking, attending and using ongoing training beyond graduate school is the way to improve foundational skillsets and knowledge gained in graduate training. A bedrock of the role of a social worker is to always gain knowledge and awareness of new ideas, interventions, modalities and ways to support our clients, communities and organizations. This program will give an overview of the continuing education process in New York State and beyond.

This 1-hour workshop will address the regulatory processes that lead to continuing education for licensed professionals in New York State. The program will share the varying types of learning social workers can engage in, how other surrounding states (like New Jersey) address continuing education for social workers, and a brief overview of what other licensing boards expect depending upon the state or region the licensed professional is from. Very basic information on becoming a provider of continuing education will be shared.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Grasp the regulatory provisions in New York State that require continuing education for licensed social workers (e.g. types, what counts and does not, etc.).
  • Understand the modalities in which continuing education can be provided.
  • Compare and contrast how continuing education is handled for licensed professionals in neighboring states (e.g. NJ, CT and PA) and beyond.
  • Gain a beginning understanding of the steps to becoming a provider of continuing education.

NASW-NYC Member: $10 | Other Chapter Member: $15 | Non-Member: $20

Please note: This is not a continuing education workshop and this workshop will not provide any continuing education credits.
