In this online workshop, presenter Rachel Harlich, LMSW will provide you with the background necessary to work with LGBTQ+ clients, from explaining important terms, what to know about the lived experiences of gender and sexuality diverse people, language to avoid, other common therapist missteps in practice, and ways to actively create affirmative practices.

If you are working with LGBTQ+ individuals in your work it is essential to be able to work with them competently and affirmatively, in order to practice responsibly and safely – as missteps and microaggressions have negative health outcomes for LGBTQ+ clients. There can be a big learning curve when it comes to serving this population, and thus the presenter will break this information down to be understandable and actionable.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Have a clear understanding of the complex concepts of sex, gender, sexuality.
• Understand the broad spectrum of gender identities, expressions, sexual and romantic orientations.
• Learn how to avoid misgendering, mispronoun-ing, and saying offensive things to LGB and TGNC clients.
• Learn about specific clinical concerns to pay attention to when serving this community in order to provide safe, competent care.
• Identify pro-active strategies for making your setting and approach affirming to LGBTQ+ clients.

Rachel Harlich, LMSW is a queer trauma psychotherapist who has been in the field of mental health and social services for more than a decade. Rachel has worked with queer and trans youth in crisis prevention and queer and trans adults as a psychotherapist and case manager. She has also worked with people in non-monogamous and BDSM relationships, HIV survivors, patients seeking abortions, sexual assault survivors, dually diagnosed people who use substances, and individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses.

Requests received after the deadline may not be able to be processed or fulfilled in time for the event.

NASW-NYC Certificates Policy

As per New York State Continuing Education guidelines, attendees must arrive on time and attend the ENTIRE workshop to receive their Continuing Education Contact Hours. Any attendees who arrive late or leaves early to a workshop will not receive their certificate, is not allowed admittance into the workshop and is also not eligible for a refund in any way. 

Please ensure that your registration and evaluation information is accurate as this may impact your continuing education certificates as your certificates will reflect the information you provided.  NASW-NYC is not responsible for the accuracy of your registration information. To receive your certificate of completion, you must be present for the entire webinar and complete an evaluation.

NASW-NYC Refund Policy

All refund requests must be submitted in writing to accounting.naswnyc@socialworkers.org no later than four business days prior to the workshop date. Refund e-mails must include the subject line "Refund Request" as well as the attendee's name, workshop date and title in the body of the e-mail. If a refund is requested later than four business days prior to the workshop date, NASW-NYC has the right to refuse the request.

- All refunds are subject to a fee of 25% for administrative processing fees

- Refund requests typically take 1-2 weeks processing time

- Refunds ONLY. Credit cannot be issued toward a future program date or substituted for another workshop.

If the workshop is cancelled, you will be informed ahead of time and fully refunded.
