Exposure therapy is a specific type of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy designed to help people face problematic fears step-by-step. Clients often present with a wide range of common fears in counseling: social anxiety, public speaking anxiety, or test anxiety, for example. 

When chronic fears are not addressed, they can develop into phobias such as social phobia, intimacy phobia, and/or trauma-related phobias. Through systematic cognitive and behavioral techniques, a client is gradually exposed to the feared trigger that causes them distress with the aim of gradually neutralizing or reducing the fear. The goal of exposure therapy is to create a safe environment in which a client can reduce anxiety, decrease avoidance of dreaded situations, and improve one's quality of life.

Participants in this course will be offered practical strategies to apply directly into clinical practice.

With this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Understand the fundamentals of Exposure Therapy – conceptualize the cyclical mechanism of anxiety and how it triggers chronic cycles of avoidance developing into phobias.
• Set up fear hierarchies /ladders specific to a client's temperament, circumstances, and abilities.
• Draw from a range of cognitive and behavioral strategies to help clients develop the courage to progress forward through progressive exposure behavioral experiments and integrate competence into self-concept.

Dr. Reji Mathew, LCSW is a senior clinical social worker with over 15 years of direct clinical treatment experience at the New York University, Counseling & Wellness Student Health Center in college mental health. 

She is a CE and MSW clinical instructor specializing in evidence-based integrative skill therapies – DBT, CBT, ACT, Positive Psychology, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, CFT, Exposure Therapy, and Mindfulness. Dr. Mathew is a frequent instructor at NYU- Washington Square, NYU - SSW, NYU- STAC (St. Thomas Aquinas College), NYU - Sarah Lawrence, and also has taught at Hunter College School of Social Work, and the Brooklyn OHEL Institute for Training.

Dr. Mathew's social justice activism perspective drawn from her work in narrative therapy and narrative journalism. She is a freelance health advocacy journalist and a professional member of ASJA (American Society of Authors and Journalists.)

Dr. Mathew is also working toward certification as a REAT (Registered Expressive Arts Therapist). She is an active expressive arts advocate and maintains a visual arts project on “Positivity, Hope & The Art of Pause.”

NASW-NYC Certificates Policy

As per New York State Continuing Education guidelines, attendees must arrive on time and attend the ENTIRE workshop to receive their Continuing Education Contact Hours. Any attendees who arrive late or leaves early to a workshop will not receive their certificate, is not allowed admittance into the workshop and is also not eligible for a refund in any way. 

Please ensure that your registration and evaluation information is accurate as this may impact your continuing education certificates as your certificates will reflect the information you provided.  NASW-NYC is not responsible for the accuracy of your registration information. To receive your certificate of completion, you must be present for the entire webinar and complete an evaluation.

NASW-NYC Refund Policy

All refund requests must be submitted in writing to accounting.naswnyc@socialworkers.org no later than four business days prior to the workshop date. Refund e-mails must include the subject line "Refund Request" as well as the attendee's name, workshop date and title in the body of the e-mail. If a refund is requested later than four business days prior to the workshop date, NASW-NYC has the right to refuse the request.

- All refunds are subject to a fee of 25% for administrative processing fees

- Refund requests typically take 1-2 weeks processing time

- Refunds ONLY. Credit cannot be issued toward a future program date or substituted for another workshop.

If the workshop is cancelled, you will be informed ahead of time and fully refunded.
