Transgender folks are at risk of medical trauma as there is a clear lack of queer-, particularly trans-, competent and affirming mental health professionals. This training aims to make clinicians feel more confident and empowered to deliver affirming and competent services to trans clients and can, in turn, potentially lower rates of suicide attempts, create less cultural and institutional bias, and generally improve social conditions for transgender people. Participants will receive a basic overview of relevant clinical and practical issues in serving trans clients, including supporting trans clients through transition and the different aspects of transition. In this workshop, the presenter will touch on why this work matters, the different terms and aspects of trans identity, how to conceptualize the client's gender identity with the client, and how to form a transition timeline for both client and clinician. The impact of healthcare policies and structure on transgender clients, as well as the practical skills needed to advocate for these clients will also be discussed.
With this workshop, participants will be able to:
-
Explain the basics of how to guide transgender clients through gender exploration.
- Give definitions of basic terms related to trans and queer competency.
- Understand the basic necessities to write support letters for clients' gender affirming procedures.
