Settings which employ social workers are often busy and stressful, and interpersonal conflict among employees from that stress can contribute to burnout, resentment and turnover. Research shows that organizations in various industries who worked with their staff using DISC assessment tools, to better understand conflict, have seen improvements in the way those conflicts were handled among employees. The DISC assessment is a behavioral assessment tool that was created by psychologist William Moulton Marston. An acronym based on the four personality and behavioral styles it measures (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness), this tool uses patterns of behavior to understand those behaviors in the workplace. This workshop will present how DISC can be understood with specific emphasis on the unique challenges of social work settings. The presenter will discuss how it impacts social work practice, the different ways this tool can resolve conflict and increase productivity while working in teams, as well as cover ways understanding the different DISC personalities can apply to any group work, including work with clients.

Understand what the DISC assessment is and how to use it to understand colleagues and direct reports' behavior and learning styles
- Identify their own behavior styles within the DISC framework
- Learn how to work most effectively with colleagues and manage teams who have different behavior styles

Ashley Owen, LMSW has been a Licensed Master Social Worker in New York since 2012. She graduated from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and has previously worked in administrative, clinical and/or supervisory capacities for Vibrant Emotional Health (formerly MHA of NYC), Safe Horizon, New York University, and the New York Council on Problem Gambling. She recently began a new role at the Staten Island Partnership for Community Wellness where she co-manages a coalition focused on addiction prevention, and works with a multidisciplinary team of public health professionals on addressing social determinants of health and creating more equitable systems of behavioral health care.

NASW-NYC Certificates Policy
As per New York State Continuing Education guidelines, attendees must arrive on time and attend the ENTIRE workshop to receive their Continuing Education Contact Hours. Any attendees who arrive late or leaves early to
a workshop will not receive their certificate, is not allowed admittance into the workshop and is also not eligible for a refund in any way.
NASW-NYC's policy and practice is to email a post-workshop evaluation link to each attendee within 1-3 business days after the workshop date. The evaluation will be open for a minimum of 30 calendar days and is sent to the email address attendees provided to NASW-NYC upon registering for the workshop(s). Once an attendee completes their evaluation, their certificate is automatically generated by the system and emailed to them. Completing your evaluation also allows NASW-NYC to receive a copy of the certificate. Please ensure that your registration and evaluation information is accurate (name, e-mail, license type and number) as this will impact your continuing education certificates as your certificates will reflect the information you provided. NASW-NYC is not responsible for the accuracy of your registration information.
NASW-NYC will re-issue continuing education certificates for a fee of $10.00 per certificate.
NASW-NYC Refund Policy
All refund requests must be submitted in writing to accounting.naswnyc@socialworkers.org no later than four business days prior to the workshop date. Refund e-mails must include the subject line "Refund Request" as well as the attendee's name, workshop date and title in the body of the e-mail. If a refund is requested later than four business days prior to the workshop date, NASW-NYC has the right to refuse the request.
- All refunds are subject to a fee of 25% for administrative processing fees
- Refund requests typically take 1-2 weeks processing time
- Refunds ONLY. Credit cannot be issued toward a future program date or substituted for another workshop.
If the workshop is cancelled, you will be informed ahead of time and fully refunded.
