Reaching Children: How to Use Play Therapy in Clinical Practice

Social work practice with children comes with a unique set of challenges, from establishing a therapeutic relationship with them to engaging their parents. This workshop will include the basics of play therapy; how play therapy helps children therapeutically as well as developmentally and cognitively; how to work with parents who want to know why you are wasting their money by “just” playing with their children and the importance of engaging parents in their child’s therapy. The workshop will also address children who are unable to play and what this means. It will discuss “cheating” which is a hot topic in play therapy. There will be an experiential component as well – participants will play one of the most widely used therapeutic games so clinicians can experience what more structured play therapy is in practice.

Robin Donath, LCSW, is a graduate of the NYU Silver School of Social Work. She graduated from NIP’s Three Year Child and Adolescent Analytic Training Program, and she is a Co-Director of NIP’s Relational Child and Adolescent One Year Program. She also completed the Post-Analytic One Year Program at IPSS. She is an adjunct assistant professor at the NYU Silver School of Social Work and an adjunct lecturer at the Hunter College Silberman School of Social Work. She also teaches in the NYU Silver School of Social Work Post-Masters Clinical Certificate Program. She was a founding member of the committee that developed the curriculum for the Child and Family Focus “Flow” at the NYU Silver School of Social Work where she created the current syllabus for and also teaches the first Child Development class taught in a Social Work Masters Program in the US. She resides in Manhattan where she has a full-time private practice working with children, adolescents and adults.
