This workshop will review the values and ethics of the social work profession, and how these are applied in different practice settings. The workshop will explore how to recognize ethical issues, will review theories for ethical decision-making, and will explore particular issues of tension within social work practice, especially in regards to electronic communication.

Deontological and consequentialist ethical theories will be explained and explored. The logic of these different approaches to ethical reasoning will then be applied to a range of practice scenarios. Particular attention will be paid to the concepts of self-determination, confidentiality, conflict of interest, and dual relationships. Dilemmas unique to electronic communication will also be explored.

Sarah-Jane (S.J. Dodd), MSEd, MSW, P.D is an Associate Professor at Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, CUNY where she teaches courses on Social Welfare Policy; Human Sexuality; Professional Seminar; and Research Methods. Prior research includes being the Principal Investigator of the Shuster Grant for research in “Understanding the Tension: Ethical Issues Encountered by Social Work Students During Field Placement”. Ms. Dodd also served as the Principal Investigator for the PSC- CUNY Grant titled “Identifying the Discomfort: An Examination of Ethical Issues Encountered by MSW Students During Field Placement”.
