The November 9th Addictions Committee meeting will have a special presentation about the proposed substance use disorder (SUD) counselor scope of practice functions  and the recommended supervision definitions and minimum requirements in an OASAS-certified treatment setting. Julia Fesko, OASAS Director, Bureau of Talent Management will join us via teleconference to share these proposed changes.

Additionally, this month we have a very unique presentation, "Peer Services Have Arrived."

Lureen McNeil, Program Manager, Recovery Policy, Planning and Peers Services, NYS Office of Alcoholism, & Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) and Anthony Shaw, Peer Ambassador will bring to us the concept and reality of peer service integration into the substance use system.

Peers are in a position to fundamentally change the way we do business.  However, the role of peers are largely misunderstood.

This presentation will provide a foundational understanding of  this key piece of the behavioral health transition - the role  of peer services, as well as introduce a "Peer Ambassador"  who has proven effective in working at policy tables, with veterans, and in treatment and criminal justice systems.

Finally, below is a wonderful opportunity for Master's level students interested in working with the substance use disorders clients.

Minority Fellowship Program for Addiction Counselors

Master's level students who are enrolled in a program that is on this list are eligible to apply for a fellowship award of up to $18,000 per Fellow. Students do not need to be a minority or LGBT to qualify. They must commit to providing addiction counseling services to underserved populations for six months post-graduation. Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis and can be found here

We look forward to seeing you all the November 9th  meeting, 9:00am
