While motivational interviewing started in the substance abuse field, it has been shown to be effective for jump-starting change far outside the scope of addiction treatment, including various diagnoses such as anxiety and depression, as well as across diverse populations, such as adolescents. This training will serve as a primer on theories of change in human behavior, as well as an introduction to core principles and strategies designed to tap into intrinsic motivation to alter behaviors that get in the way of a meaningful life.
The training will be divided into three sections. The first section will be largely didactic, introducing theories of change and the core principles of motivational interviewing. Then, learners will learn and practice key interventions in dyad and group settings. Lastly, learners will learn and practice strategies specifically designed for people who are either unwilling to change, or are paralyzed by their ambivalence regarding change.
Several examples of cases will be included, and will reflect diverse population and problem presentations representative of New York City. Participants will receive handouts that include a quick guide, as well as worksheets for change planning, decisional balancing, and measuring readiness.
