Anti-Oppressive Framework: Reshaping Social Work Practice		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	10:40 AM	12:40 PM	6/14/2019 10:40 AM - 12:40 PM Presenter: Folusho Otuyelu, PhD, LCSW and Shakira Kennedy, PhD, LMSW Anti-oppression work includes but is not limited to individual and group strategies but organizational practices that supports inclusive and equitable treatment of all involved. This can only be achieved through knowledge and skills centered on anti-oppressive work. This workshop will focus on providing managers, supervisors and individuals with tools on how to engage in anti-oppressive practice, how to ameliorate oppression in the work place and how to engage in effective social work practice using an anti-oppressive framework. Audience members will receive clear directions on how to engage in difficult conversations as well as how to foster a healthy work environment whilst providing important services. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Understand what anti-oppressive practice looks like Develop tools and skills for anti-oppressive practice with clients, in supervision and in engaging with administrative management in their organization 2 SW CE Contact Hours Folusho Otuyelu, PhD, LCSW is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Licensure Preparation Manager for Touro College's Graduate School of Social Work. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 22 years of experience working with children, adolescents and their families in the mental health and child welfare areas of practice, and has a private practice focused on working with individuals and families. Dr. Otuyelu holds a PhD in Social Work from Fordham University, and Master of Science degree in Social Work from Columbia University School of Social Work. Shakira Kennedy, PhD, LMSW has over 18 years of clinical, operation and facility management experience. She has partnered and assisted several community agencies in start-up management, adoption/foster care homestudy evaluations and community assessments. Prior to her full-time academic appointment, Dr. Kennedy worked for a number of large not-for-profit organizations in a central leadership capacity supervising program directors and assistant executive directors, among other titles. Dr. Kennedy continues her connection to the community by being an active member of Westchester Black Women’s Political Caucus, an active journal reviewer for SAGE Open publications, a guest editor for the Reflections Journal, a reviewer for a special edition of the Journal of Social Work Education of Meeting the Grand Challenge of Ending Homelessness, and a consulting editor for the journal Children & Schools. She is also an Association for Social Work Boards (ASWB) scholar and has served on the Licensing & Regulation Task Force to develop the Curricular Guide for Licensing and Regulation.
Crossover Youth: Policy and Practice		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	10:40 AM	12:40 PM	6/14/2019 10:40 AM - 12:40 PM Presenter: Naomi Cavanaugh, LMSW This workshop will provide an overview of research, policy, and practice on Crossover Youth, youth involved in both the child welfare and criminal justice systems. It will focus on their unique needs and the obstacles created when families are ensnared in these two systems, including privacy and confidentiality concerns, the duplication of services, the multitude of court hearings and appointments and other issues. The workshop will also focus on the impact of trauma and structural racism on this population, especially the increased likelihood of traumatized youth of color becoming justice involved and the challenges they face in both systems. The session will provide of overview of the Crossover Youth Practice Model (CYPM) which was designed by Georgetown University’s Center for Juvenile Justice Reform (CJJR) and implemented by New York City in 2014-16. Implications of Raise the Age on Crossover Youth will also be discussed. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Define Crossover Youth and understand the importance of focusing on them Identify systemic challenges in meeting the needs of crossover youth Understand the process of implementing new policy and practice across multiple city agencies 2 SW CE Contact Hours Naomi Cavanaugh, LMSW, the Executive Director of Juvenile Justice Permanency Planning at New York City Children’s Services' Division of Youth & Family Justice (ACS DYFJ), received her MSW from Fordham University in 2004 and began her social work career at the Coalition for the Homeless. From 2007-13 she was at the Legal Aid Society Juvenile Rights and was a Social Work Supervisor when she left to join ACS. Currently, she oversees the Confirm Unit and ACS’s efforts to improve outcomes for Crossover Youth. She was one of the ACS leaders in the implementation of the Crossover Youth Practice Model.
Current Topics in Medicare and Medicaid		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	10:40 AM	12:40 PM	6/14/2019 10:40 AM - 12:40 PM Presenter: Thomas Bane, LMSW One-in-three Americans are involved in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) program. As such, there is an opportunity to create change in the healthcare system and achieve better health outcomes for all populations. This workshop will identify the key priorities, successes, and ongoing goals of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) policies. The workshop will also highlight trends in care delivery, including an explanation of the transition from fee-for-service to value-based payment models, examples of healthcare innovations related to social work, and key policy changes. A secondary focus of the workshop will be on the opioid crisis and what CMS is doing to address the opioid epidemic through prevention, treatment, and data utilization in partnership with clinicians and organizations. Communities across the country, including in New York City and State, are experiencing devastating impacts of elevated rates of opioid addiction, also known as opioid use disorder. Nationally, only 20% of people suffering from opioid use disorder receive appropriate treatment and communities of color face additional barriers, which should galvanize the social work profession and its partners to client-centered action and innovation. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Describe the changing landscape of care delivery and payment systems as well as understand the implications for social work practice Identify which healthcare policy changes will impact Medicare clients Identify policy and organizational strategies to reduce opioid overprescription and misuse as well as expand access to opioid use disorder treatment to prevent overdose 2 SW CE Contact Hours 2 LMFT CE Contact Hours 2 CASAC Hours Thomas Bane, LMSW is part of the Regional External Affairs team for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He collaborates with stakeholders across New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) to ensure that communities have up-to-date information about government health insurance programs. Most recently he was part of hurricane recovery efforts in the USVI. Mr. Bane provides trainings and presentations on various health insurance topics including Medicare, Medicaid, and the Health Insurance Exchanges. He received his MSW from Columbia University.
Journeying Toward Father-Inclusive Practice		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	10:40 AM	12:40 PM	6/14/2019 10:40 AM - 12:40 PM Presenter: Lena Green, DSW, LCSW, CLC Evidence shows the influence of fathers as a separate, significant factor in child development and children’s successful transition though infancy to adulthood. Fathers’ involvement in the lives of children has routinely shown to have positive outcomes across social-emotional, behavioral and cognitive domains. The government, services providers, and professionals increasingly recognize the need to engage fathers in treatment, services and programs to enhance overall child and family well-being. With this increased attention to the role fathers play in child development, it is imperative clinicians gain knowledge and skills to effectively treat and engage fathers as an integral member of the family system, work toward mitigating barriers and understand the dynamics of the co-parenting relationship on family cohesion and resilience. This workshop will offer an overview of fatherhood, working with men as fathers, engaging fathers in practice, barriers to treatment and sustaining father-inclusiveness to support families. As a clinical social worker, psychotherapist and fatherhood practitioner, Dr. Green has over 15 years of direct clinical practice with families. Her current work explores paternal perinatal depression, the experiences of young fathers and the impact on paternal involvement and family dynamics. Dr. Green holds a DSW and MSW from NYU, a BA from the UMass Amherst, a post-masters in the treatment of alcohol and substance abuse from NYU and advance clinical practice from Hunter College. Opioid Response Network: Leveraging Community Against an Epidemic		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	10:40 AM	12:40 PM	6/14/2019 10:40 AM - 12:40 PM Presenter: Ariel Hurley, LMSW and Michael Knabel, MS Across the country, the opioid epidemic has sparked a renewed sense of urgency towards putting longstanding evidenced-based research into practice; working collaboratively across the entire continuum of care; and ensuring that all people suffering from substance use disorders have equitable access to resources. The Opioid Response Network (formerly the Opioid State Targeted Response Technical Assistance Consortium) was created by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to support community efforts to address the evidence-based prevention, treatment, and recovery of opioid use disorder through training and technical assistance provided by local specialists. Technical assistance is an effective tool for improving communication and collaboration across systems, with the ultimate goal of bridging the gap among research, policy, and practice, as well as for expanding upon programming that is already in place. The presenters will provide an overview of the project structure and the various technical assistance delivery methods, as well as engage with the audience on ways to support communities’ response to the opioid epidemic. This workshop will include case examples at the city level in comparison to other technical assistance projects at the state, region, and national levels. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Gain a better understanding of technical assistance and the EPIS implementation framework Name the opportunities available for Technical Assistance in their substance use prevention, treatment, or recovery organization Understand the current gaps in research, policy, and practice for substance use disorder services Know about how the opioid epidemic is being addressed on the local, state, and national level through unique partnerships and leveraging of local specialists 2 SW CE Contact Hours 2 LMFT CE Contact Hours 2 CASAC Hours Ariel Hurley, LMSW is a licensed social worker and a public health practitioner specializing in the implementation of evidence-based practices for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Through her previous work at the NYC DOHMH, she researched the anthropological circumstances surrounding opioid overdose deaths, as well as designed awareness campaign pilots addressing fentanyl’s role in the opioid epidemic. Currently, as the HHS Region 2 Technology Transfer Specialist for SAMHSA’s Opioid Response Network, she coordinates comprehensive initiatives that are designed to build organizational staff, and individual capacities to apply EBPs to meet locally identified needs related to the opioid epidemic. Michael Knabel, MS is the Sr. Project Manager for Opioid Response Network Operations at the Addiction Technology Transfer Center’s National Coordinating Office. Currently, he oversees a team of 21 Technology Transfer Specialists across the states and territories, who respond to complex requests for technical assistance to address the opioid epidemic at the national, regional, state, and local level. Mr. Knabel's previous experience was in project management, implementation, and child welfare policy. He provided direct service to children in foster care, and, as a Sr. Supervisor with a Court-Appointed Special Advocates program, advocated best interests of abused/neglected children before the court.
Trauma Informed Self-in-Community Care		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	10:40 AM	12:40 PM	6/14/2019 10:40 AM - 12:40 PM Presenter: Mayowa Obasaju, PhD and Kate Barrow, LCSW This workshop provides a trauma-informed overview of factors contributing to burnout and vicarious trauma. Time will be spent exploring the differences between burnout, vicarious trauma, and the moral injury. Participants will learn about self- and community-care through a power and privilege framework. The workshop will explore the connection between oppression and trauma, and how it can amplify the impact of vicarious trauma and moral injury for workers. Participants will develop strategies for ongoing self-care in a community context. Via didactic lecture, small group discussions, and reflective exercises, participants will build their practical knowledge of how to engage in self in community care on the job. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Identify how stress manifests for themselves and their colleagues in the workplace Know the definitions of and differences between burnout, moral injury, and vicarious trauma Explore their reactions when exposed to trauma Develop strategies for individual and collective burnout and vicarious trauma prevention 2 SW CE Contact Hours Mayowa Obasaju, PhD is a clinical and community, trauma and healing focus ed psychologist, trainer, and educator. Ms. Obasaju works as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the Psychology Department and as a Supervisor of social workers at Wediko Children's Services-NY Based School Program. For seven years, Mayowa worked at the Furman Counseling Center of Barnard College, Columbia University where she provided individual and group psychotherapy with a focus on healing work with students who have experienced various forms of trauma. Ms. Obasaju was also an adjunct professor at NYU Silver School of Social Work from 2013-2015. Kate Barrow, LCSW specializes in trauma-informed approaches to power, identity, and systems change work. She currently works as a clinical supervisor, management coach, therapist, and trainer. Ms. Barrow has been a nonprofit manager for nearly 15 years and training social workers for a decade. She launched a professional development institute at the Center for Court Innovation, overseeing professional development initiatives for an interdisciplinary staff of over 500. Previously, she directed clinical programs in court-based, social service, and foster care settings. She was an adjunct professor at NYU Silver School of Social Work from 2012-2015, teaching on social justice/criminal justice topics.
Using Social Media: Some Ethical Guidelines		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	10:40 AM	12:40 PM	6/14/2019 10:40 AM - 12:40 PM Presenter: Kathleen Ray, PhD Social media is an increasingly essential role in both our personal lives and as a tool in our organizations. It can be a powerful instrument to connect with the community, clients, volunteers, providers, and potential funders. It is a way to promote programming, education and fundraising activities, and can often reach people who are not usually able to access mental health care. It is a new skill set that mental health organizations need to learn and, due to our ethical considerations in mental health settings, it is imperative to understand the possible risks of using social media and how to protect our clients in our social media use. This workshop will reflect on the very short but influential history of social media, how to develop a social media policy, which platforms are useful for different types of communication, and how to meet your organizational goals. Finally, you will be introduced on how to evaluate the impact of your social media use. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Create a social media policy How to use different social media platforms How to evaluate the impact of social media for their agency 2 SW CE Contact Hours Kathleen Ray, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Ramapo College of New Jersey and Co-Convener of the Minor in Substance Use Disorders. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a certified social work supervisor with over 25 years of experience working in mental health care in multiple settings. Dr. Ray has been a clinical researcher with the veteran population, studying reintegration, PTSD, TBI, and clinical assessment tools. She is currently involved in macro work is interested in how agencies develop social media policies.

Action Methods in the Treatment of Addiction		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	2:10 PM	4:10 PM	6/14/2019 2:10 PM - 4:10 PM Presenter: Valerie Simon, LCSW, PAT Addiction destroys countless lives and families. Over 70,000 Americans died from overdoses in 2017. According to an NIH statistic, it costs the US more than $740 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity, and health care. There are many protocols for addiction treatment, yet relapse rates remain quite high. While there is no one treatment approach that is right for everyone, in this experiential workshop attendees will explore why action methods like psychodrama can be an effective treatment model or as an adjunct modality. The workshop will teach how trauma changes the brain, and how unresolved trauma often leads to such self-medicating behaviors as substance abuse and other process addictions. Attendees will learn basic experiential techniques to use with clients, along with the brain science that shows how action methods help to resolve trauma. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Understand basic brain structure that is impacted by trauma and learn how unresolved trauma often leads to addiction issues Identify why action methods are beneficial to clients recovering from addiction Utilize three experiential psychodrama techniques to use with clients recovering from addiction 2 SW CE Contact Hours 2 LMFT CE Contact Hours 2 CASAC Hours Valerie Simon, LCSW, PAT is a certified practitioner and trainer in psychodrama. She is the creator of The Inner Stage experiential workshops and trainings. Specializing in trauma and addiction, Valerie works with individuals/couples and facilitates experiential groups and intensives in her NYC private practice. Ms. Simon received her MSW at NYU and has worked in a variety of settings including hospitals, addiction facilities, public schools, and mental health clinics. She provided services to those affected by September 11th through Project Liberty, and aided Gulf Coast musicians after Hurricane Katrina through her work at the Jazz Foundation of America.
Challenging Social Injustice for Adults Aging with Serious Mental Illness (SMI)		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	2:10 PM	4:10 PM	6/14/2019 2:10 PM - 4:10 PM Presenter: Elisa Chow, PhD, ACSW and Pamela Herring, MSW Late adulthood can be a time of great fulfillment however for many, our culture’s emphasis on youth and a fast-paced life leads to a declining role for older adults in their social and work life. Often, they are marginalized and seen as victims of false cultural expectations and stereotypes, and for people living with a serious mental illness (SMI), histories of trauma and homelessness, all of these experiences have exacerbated greater physical and social challenges. For these older adults, it can be a time of tremendous despair and isolation. Rather than seeing aging as a barrier, social workers must be proactive and creative around conceptualizing new program frameworks that may ultimately dismantle systemic oppression and recognize the innate strengths and resilience of all individuals served. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Identify myths, stereotypes and biases of how race, age and disability intersect Define aging in community Describe strategies of healthy aging using trauma informed, recovery oriented, integrated care and person-centered (TRIP) principles in which behavioral health providers both at the leadership and staff level can operationalize to promote equity 2 SW CE Contact Hours Elisa Chow, PhD, ACSW is the VP, Outcomes Evaluation at ICL. She has long-standing experience and expertise in data collection, analyses, and reporting across project evaluations throughout the agency, including those specific to federal, state and city-funded projects. She is the Co-Chair of ICL’s Aging in Community Team, an interdisciplinary team which primary focus is to develop service models addressing the whole health of individuals so that they can successfully age in their communities. She is also the co-author of the Diabetes and Healthy Living Self-Management Workbooks and the TRIP training curriculum Pamela Herring, MSW is a Native New Yorker born to a Puerto Rican mother and Black American father, raised by her Ecuadorian blended family. Since childhood, she has had a passion for humanity and different forms of art. Additionally, art has allowed Pamela to creatively share herself in a place of solace and self-healing that she uses to connect with people in social work. Ms. Herring has always been personable and her success and joy in the field of social work has always stemmed from her empathic nature. She is a helping hand to others, lending ear, and active giver of her community.

Paul, LCSW-R Black Women in the United States are disproportionately affected by the most common mental illnesses compared to the dominant culture. Closing the Gap in Black Women’s mental health requires awareness and therefore requires increasing the mental health literacy of black women. By increasing black women’s mental health literacy, we heighten their ability to effectively self-report mental health concerns and get the professional mental health treatment they need. Mental health literacy replaces inaccurate thoughts with knowledge that leads individuals to treatment and helps in the elimination of stigma. It is necessary to empower black women to seek professional mental health treatment. This program will explore the barriers that prevent black women from seeking professional mental health treatment and call workshop attendees to be culturally sensitive to marginalized populations. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Explore mental health disparities of black women Explore cultural barriers of professional mental health treatment Increase cultural competence of providers who work with black women Learn how to be a mental health advocate with disenfranchised populations 2 SW CE Contact Hours La Shawn M. Paul, LCSW-R is a therapist and mental health advocate. She is the owner of Social Work Diva, a provider of mental health services including psychotherapy, clinical supervision, and mental health consultation. Ms. Paul earned her M.S. in Social Work from Columbia University and is pursuing her Doctorate in Social Work from the University of Southern California. Her commitment to mental health equity has garnered her several awards and lead to her recognition by Huff Post as one of the Ten Black Female Therapists to Know.
Creating Community in Online Education		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	2:10 PM	4:10 PM	6/14/2019 2:10 PM - 4:10 PM Presenter: Lynn Levy, PhD, LMSW and Jill Becker, PhD, LCSW This workshop will focus on the opportunities for creating a real community through creative approaches to online education. The two faculty members that will present this workshop were principal developers of a unique virtual community that they named 'The Heights'. The Heights mirrors many small and mid-sized cities in the diversity of their population, the variety of socio-economic levels, the complexity of the needs and resources available to the residents of each community. Through the use of scenarios, students must engage with this virtual community, exploring supportive resources for their clients, opportunities for personal growth, educational, older adult, and health-related facilities. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to ‘The Heights’ and learn how it was conceived and integrated throughout the curriculum with students. Several scenarios and opportunities for participants to engage with ‘The Heights’ will be provided. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Increase their knowledge of how social work educators and other professionals may find use online tools in their own settings Diminish the level of resistance they may experience when thinking about, or confronted with an online platform Conceptualize multiple methods of engaging virtual learning 2 SW CE Contact Hours Lynn Levy, PhD, LMSW is an Associate Clinical Professor at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work where she serves as sequence chair for several courses. Dr. Levy is faculty liaison for Student Life both chairs and sits on several key committees that enhance the academic community and teaches in the master and doctoral, face-to-face and online program, for which she developed three courses. Dr. Levy focused much of her career on assisting couples prior to marriage through groups and workshops. She wrote a book with her husband, a psychologist, entitled 'The Resilient Couple: Navigating Together Through Life." Jill Becker, PhD, LCSW is director of an urban senior center with multiple programs. Dr. Becker oversaw a vital intergenerational program pairing many high-risk adolescents with older adults. Since 2003, her focus has been teaching graduate level social work. She is committed to providing rich educational experiences focused on best practices incorporating case and evidence-based frameworks.
Understanding Otherness When Working with LGBTQ Clients		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	2:10 PM	4:10 PM	6/14/2019 2:10 PM - 4:10 PM Presenter: Eileen Klein, PhD It is important for social workers to be able to understand the unique needs of the LGBTQ individuals and their inability to access affirming social services by providers that are unaware of their challenges in forming social relationships, both within the LGBTQ community, the larger society and their families. These challenges lead to more social isolation, depression, and substance use than their heterosexual counterparts, and result in gaps in physical and mental health services due to discrimination. Therefore, the need for social work practitioners to be forthright in our acceptance of the sexual minority client is essential for meaningful intervention to be possible. This workshop is especially essential for social worker educators to provide these skills to their students and those in the field, as Swank and Raiz (2008) reported that undergraduate social workers were the most condemning of LGBT clients while employed social workers were the least so. This workshop will present information for administrators, educators, and practitioners on how to provide LGBTQ affirming services. There will be a discussion of practice guidelines on the creation of a safe therapeutic environment for engagement with LGBTQ clients. The workshop will focus on how to provide open, inclusive, and welcoming treatment services because remaining in the ‘closet’ is the equivalent of ‘denying the essence of oneself for sexual minority clients’ (Langley, 2001, p.923). Case examples of the effectiveness of this type of inclusion will be presented for individuals and groups. Discussion of the ability to provide services and establish clinical relationships with clinicians that are not LGBT identified will enable all trained professionals to effectively engage with this client cohort. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Demonstrate their understanding of the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ client including information on sexual minority stress and health disparities in group discussion Identify their own feelings about working with LGBTQ clients using a group exercise Use their knowledge to provide services to LGBTQ clients that are competent and welcoming Make their practice/agency LGBTQ affirming 2 SW CE Contact Hours 2 LMFT CE Contact Hours Eileen Klein, PhD is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Ramapo College. Dr. Klein worked for over 30 years in public mental health with severely mentally ill clients. While working as the Deputy Director of Inpatient Operations, she focused on community reintegration for psychiatric inpatients, and affirmative treatment for sexual minorities. Dr. Klein’s research includes improving health and mental health outcomes for LGBT clients and teaching social workers to work competently with sexual minorities. She has a Ph.D. in Clinical Social Work from New York University.
When Dementia Leads to Arrest		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	2:10 PM	4:10 PM	6/14/2019 2:10 PM - 4:10 PM Presenter: Susanna Eckblad, LCSW and Anne Foerg, LMSW In the current era of Close Rikers, much attention is being focused on strategies for criminal justice reform. However, amidst this progress, those with dementia who experience criminal justice involvement face a system that too often treats behavioral symptoms of this condition as punishable offenses. This is a particularly vulnerable population to which little to no attention has been devoted. In this workshop, a geriatric social worker and a criminal defense social worker will discuss their history of collaboration with this population, identifying the gaps in our current legal and social service systems. The workshop will provide a toolkit for clinicians and advocates, covering topics such as screening for neurocognitive disorders, strategies for advocacy, resources, and treatment planning. Case studies will be presented to illustrate how to work within the systems that do exist while also advancing the court’s knowledge of dementia. Finally, recommendations for criminal justice policy will be discussed including the need for accommodations and above all, decriminalization. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Learn about the clinical syndrome of dementia, the most common neurodegenerative causes, and the behavioral symptoms that may put an individual at risk for criminal justice involvement Increase their working knowledge of screening tools, instruments, and strategies used to identify and measure neurocognitive disorder Strengthen advocacy skills needed to obtain favorable dispositions for clients within this population Gain greater familiarity with gaps in current systems of care and resources available to serve this population 2 SW CE Contact Hours Susanna Eckblad, LCSW is a social work supervisor in the criminal defense practice at Brooklyn Defender Services. Throughout her career, she has specialized in working with individuals diagnosed with mental illness. Prior to coming to Brooklyn Defender Services, she worked at a court on Rikers Island helping clients who were accused of violating their conditions of parole. Ms. Eckblad is also a former Team Leader of an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team that served clients who were homeless and living with severe mental illness. Anne Foerg, LMSW is currently the Director of Penn South Program for Seniors, the first Naturally Occurring Retirement Community Supportive Service Program in the country, which provides comprehensive health, social, and recreational services to the older adults of this Chelsea community to support their aging in place. Previously, she was the Director of Social Work at CaringKind, the Heart of Alzheimer’s Caregiving, supporting individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Ms. Foerg has her Master’s in Social Work degree, with specialties in aging and community organizing, from the Silberman School of Social Work at CUNY’s Hunter College.
Youth Mentoring Best Practices: How to Design and Manage an Effective Mentoring Program		6/14/2019	6/14/2019	2:10 PM	4:10 PM	6/14/2019 2:10 PM - 4:10 PM Presenter: Bruce Beckwith, LCSW and Brittany Griffin Youth in high quality, long term mentoring exhibit improved socio-emotional and behavioral outcomes. Caring sustained relationships assures young people they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter. Research confirms that mentoring relationships have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic and employment goals. Yet one-in-three young people will grow up without this critical asset. Youth who are mentored are 55% more likely to apply for college than their peers. Participants in this class will learn the universally accepted "Best Practices" for designing, managing, operating and evaluating a youth mentoring imitative, including the basics of recruiting and screening volunteers, training mentors, making matches and supervising mentoring matches. With this workshop, participants will be able to: Learn the skills and infrastructure necessary to support positive youth outcomes through mentoring Discover valuable programming resources such as MENTOR's Elements of Effective Practice Toolkit, which contains more than 200 tools and templates to support effective mentoring program design, The National Mentoring Resource Center (NMRC) and the National Quality Mentoring System (NQMS) Understand the planning aspects of developing a mentoring program Know the key roles of staff in ensuring that mentoring relationships are meaningful, sustainable and fun for youth served 2 SW CE Contact Hours Bruce Beckwith, LCSW has been with Mentor New York, formerly The Mentoring Partnership of New York, for 12 years as Director of Program Development. In that time, he has taught over a thousand people how to design and manage a quality mentoring program and trained over a thousand new mentors and mentees. As part of the infrastructure of mentoring for the state of New York, he continues to consult with as many as 600 programs and new initiatives annually including the Young Men’s Initiative of the DYCD, JP Morgan Chase’s The Future Initiative and NYC DOE Success Mentors. Prior to his tenure with Mentor New York, he was Director of Mentoring at the Children’s Hope Foundation, where he ran the Superfriends program matching young people living with HIV/AIDS with mentors. Mr. Beckwith, as a licensed clinical social worker, trained couples and is a family counselor. Brittany Griffin is a Miami native and after working for the Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s Office, felt compelled to do work that would directly help and impact young people of color. In 2015, Ms. Griffin moved to the South Bronx and worked as a Community Outreach and Recruitment Specialist at Mentor New York. After serving her AmeriCorps year with Mentor New York, she was hired as a Partnership Development Associate where she supervised the incoming AmeriCorps members while continuing to cultivate partnerships with community-based organizations and government agencies. Ms. Griffin has been a project manager to over 15 capacity building projects by teaching mentoring programs on how to leverage resources from within their organizations and has consulted with mentoring programs throughout New York City. Ms. Griffin currently sits on her local community board for Education and Youth in the South Bronx and is passionate about initiatives that will empower Bronxites.
